“Hey fam! My name is Otavio, and I’m a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering. I’m from São Paulo, Brazil, a HUGE city where the outdoors always felt kind of far away. I loved being outside, but I didn’t grow up camping or backpacking, so before coming to Tufts I seriously questioned whether TWO was “for me.” I was worried that I didn’t have enough experience, and as an international student, I wasn’t sure I’d fit in.

Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

TWO was one of the best decisions I’ve made at Tufts. It didn’t just introduce me to the outdoors, it introduced me to college in the most welcoming, supportive way possible. From the start, I felt included, cared for, and genuinely part of something. The community came so naturally, and the friendships lasted WAYYY beyond our trip (I’m still having dinners with my freshman TWO group, our next one is this Sunday!).

Because TWO had such a big impact on me, I joined staff to help other FYs realize the same thing: you don’t need a certain background, experience level, or “outdoorsy” identity to belong here. Whether you’ve never slept in a tent or you’re coming from across the world, TWO is full of people who will meet you where you are at and hype you up the whole way.

If you’re on the fence about applying, take the risk. I promise you won’t regret it. 🌲”

“Hey guys! I’m Caroline, a senior studying Mechanical Engineering, and TWO has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience. As someone with diabetes who has always loved being outside, I was excited but a little unsure what managing my health in the wilderness would look like without my friends or family. But both as a first-year and later on staff, I felt completely supported, comfortable, and understood.

Because of that support, I felt safe, happy, and confident taking on mountain trails, new friendships, and truly being myself. In TWO, having “health stuff” doesn’t have to hold you back from incredible outdoor experiences. If you’re a little unsure, I really encourage you to apply!!! The TWO community is truly so loving and supportive no matter what.”

“I’m a senior majoring in Engineering Psychology and Japanese Studies! I love running, biking, and anything outdoors, and I’ve recently gotten into skiing this winter. I also enjoy baking, doing spontaneous things, eating lots of cheese, and listening to podcasts.

I didn’t participate in TWO as a freshman and wasn’t on staff until becoming a leader the summer before my senior year. My love for the outdoors is something I discovered during my time at Tufts, and I’m incredibly grateful that TWO gave me the opportunity not only to learn technical outdoor skills, but also to learn more about myself as a leader in the outdoors and beyond. TWO is a welcoming community where connections form naturally, because we don’t just talk about nature and going outside; we also talk about our identities and our feelings in outdoor spaces.

As a person of color, I found the Staff POC Affinity Space a particularly supportive and affirming environment. As a person of color, I found the Staff POC Affinity Space a particularly welcoming environment where I can share with others my loves and fears as a new leader who was new to the TWO community as well as the idea of spending extended time outdoors.

There is truly no single TWO “personality.” Everyone buys into collectively creating a community that is caring, playful, and genuine—one where you can be silly, vulnerable, and fully yourself. The connections you build with TWO is the everlasting love.”
