Nonprofit organization that provides programs/services to people with disabilities throughout LI, NY

SILO has been a staple of the disability community since 1985. An Advocacy and Information and Referral agency, it has worked with individuals, businesses, and agencies to promote equal access for people with all disabilities. SILO is not a "case management" agency; rather, our focus is on empowerment, mentorship, knowledge, and advocacy. Most of our service staff are people with disabilities themselves, and this peer model facilitates a better relationship between the Independent Living Skills Specialist and the individual being served. Two questions we ask all consumers before getting involved with us: "How badly do you want to achieve your goals?" and "Are you willing to work hard to accomplish them?" SILO's services are person-centered so individuals determine their individual goals, not other people. SILO helps the individual acquire the tools needed to accomplish those goals.

SILO was proud to take part in the 6th Annual Dinner in the Dark, hosted by Visually Impaired Persons of Long Island and ADAPT. Alongside fellow sponsors and community partners, we enjoyed an inspiring evening of raffles, dancing, and a blindfolded dinner experience, all in support of raising awareness and advancing accessibility for the blind community.

SILO had the privilege of attending NYAIL’s 2025 Statewide Conference: Leading the Way – Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders Today in Albany. Over the course of the conference, our team participated in a variety of workshops and discussions that highlighted new strategies, best practices, and innovative approaches to advancing the Independent Living movement. Each session offered valuable insights and practical tools that we are excited to bring back to Long Island to strengthen the services and advocacy we provide.

The conference was a powerful reminder of the importance of building a future rooted in independence, inclusion, and accessibility. SILO is proud to be part of this statewide effort and looks forward to carrying these lessons forward as we continue empowering the communities we serve every day.

Kirsten Burchard, from NY Connects, and Marilyn Tucci, Director of Advocacy, had the privilege of attending the Town of Brookhaven’s Annual Senior Picnic at the historic Longwood Estate. Our team connected with senior residents, shared valuable resources, and engaged in meaningful conversations with community members. It was a wonderful opportunity to support and celebrate our senior community.
