Our owner and director, Augustine Colebrook's remarks from yesterday's closing.....
A client/friend shared a powerful quote with me this week…
"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."- Arthur Schopenhauer
I start midwifery when it was in the first stage. Openly laughed at and ridiculed. Homebirth was a joke in the mid '90's. Only the very few even understood the 'why', let alone the 'how to'.
Now we have graduated to the second phase. And boy has the opposition been violent. Accusations, lawsuits, complaints, investigations, name calling, insurance audits, falsified studies; all in the name of protecting the unsuspecting public from the danger of free choice. Whole organizations grew up with the sole purpose of promoting the status quo. But the women wanted another way, or at least the choice, and so many more now know the truth.
Ultimately my truth and I believe all of your truths' is that birth is a human rights issue. Most simply, my truth is that the hospital is not the right place for every birth. But instead that women have the right to choose where and with whom they have their babies. And right now in Oregon, across America, indeed around the entire globe, Women are struggling for one of the most basic human rights - self-determination. No another person or business or insurance company or government gets to choose where and with whom we will have our babies. Wanting something different than our current medical culture offers is not wrong. It is an inalienable right.
I started wise women care associates in 2008 when I relocated to Southern Oregon. My vision was to create a holistic clinic that served the whole family. And although we phased out everything but midwifery care this year in anticipation of closing we did offer 4 1/2 years of amazing body work, primary care, lactation services and comprehensive maternity services. The building at 400 Crater Lake has housed something so special, so intangible; in fact many times I got to be the recipient of a glowing report about what it felt like just walking in this building. "It made you feel safe and made you feel like 'home' and made you feel cared for." I know you couldn't tell at the open house yesterday, because we gathered in an empty building celebrating what was, but it WAS a sacred place. I need to tell you that it was not the place: it was the people. It's the people that made that place sacred. That sacred place was the birthplace of a new community. Our community...
We are a bi-pedal, mobile species who rarely stays in one place very long and so although this community was born in that building, this community will continue to travel out into the world spreading truth. Sharing your insights; our awareness, our knowledge, our wisdom.
Because we ARE wise women!
We love the double entendre, the play on words that we've heard many times "Wise Women helped me out." We have not only helped out more than 450 families in the last 4 1/2 years, we have also nurtured and awakened more 'Wise Women'. Young siblings watched with fascination (and were cellularly imprinted) as their mothers birthed as warriors, Midwifery students graduated to open their own practices, meek women were born as strong courageous mothers, and a community found it's voice to rise up and demand freedom in childbirth.
These Wise Women will not be silenced, they will continue our mission in service to the whole family and share the wisdom they have learned with their sons and daughters and with each other and with their friends and their community. May this ripple of wise women become a wave to turn the tides. May our daughters be raised in wise women tradition, and never have reason to question their own strength, their own capacity, or their own wisdom. Perhaps we will see the next generation reclaim the sacred rite or passage, reclaim their empowerment, reclaim birth... Maybe, just maybe with enough strong, confident loud voices, the culture will come to hear this truth as self-evident. And then no one will question your daughter's choices in birth; just as no one would question that the earth is round.
I'd like to invite anyone to share any anecdotes and stories or tributes...
How did Wise Women Help you out?
