I’ve been exploring Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and facilitating DBT Skills Groups for over a decade. Throughout this time, I’ve participated in numerous trainings, gaining valuable insights, yet I often felt that something was lacking. I was in search of training sessions that not only covered DBT skills but also offered effective teaching methods. I wanted fresh approaches for sharing these skills, reliable metaphors, and detailed guides on when to introduce each concept. Unable to find a training that met my needs as a DBT clinician, I decided to create one myself.
After two years of dedication, I developed the exact training I had always envisioned. I incorporated my personal experiences from leading skills groups, including successful metaphors to reinforce concepts, user-friendly adaptations of skills, and strategies for teaching each skill effectively. This endeavor was truly a labor of love, as my greatest passion lies in DBT.
I have led groups both virtually and in person, working with clients transitioning from psychiatric inpatient units and those recently released from state correctional facilities. I’ve taught skills to skeptics who doubted the effectiveness of DBT, as well as individuals who claimed they had previously tried DBT without success. Each experience taught me valuable lessons about the challenges clients face while acquiring skills, helping me understand what works and what doesn’t. This journey has taught me to be adaptable in my methods and to remain curious about how I can make improvements to enhance the user experience.
With immense excitement and joy, I am thrilled to introduce my inaugural DBT training, The Blueprint: Teaching a DBT Skills Group.
