If our excitement fades before the kid is in school, maybe it’s time to stop claiming that we love babies.

Tell me you’re a mom in grad school without telling me you’re a mom in grad school… I realized (after class started) that the only paper I had to take notes on was this sweet drawing from my kiddo. It’s a little hard to read, but on the plus side, I’ll have a self-esteem boost every time I study 🥰.
And with that, I am officially starting my 3rd semester of public health school! Thanks for sticking around as I took a break from social media. I’m feeling re-energized and excited to be back!

So what’s the plan, then?

The plan to make accurate sexual education mandatory in every state.

The plan to increase access to contraception.

The plan to grant national paid parental leave so people can recover from their births without going broke.

The plan to provide mental health support for the people forced to continue with traumatizing pregnancies and births.

The plan to improve the healthcare worker shortage in order to take care of the very sick pregnant people who would have had a life-saving abortion, but now can’t.

Because without a plan to address to the deadly fallout that will occur, you are not allowed to claim that you are protecting life.

Social determinants of health are things like income, access to school, access to healthy food, discrimination, environment, etc. They matter enormously.

Post reads: “Research has found that the social determinants of health may impact health status more than lifestyle and healthcare. It’s time to stop judging people for their illnesses, and to start judging the society that failed them.”

Oklahoma is following in Texas’s wake by introducing a law that allows citizens to sue people suspected of receiving, providing, or somehow facilitating an abortion at any gestational age.
Regardless of how you feel about abortions, THIS is not the way.
*This didn’t just happen in 1692. This is how most witch accusations went and go down, including in present times.

Posts read: In 1692*, you could bring someone to court because you had a dream they were a witch. In 2022, you can bring someone to court because you have a hunch that they had an abortion. When you visit the sites of the Salem Witch Trials, you hear a constant mournful muttering among the visitors: “How awful.” “Can you imagine?” “How could this happen?” It is awful. Yes, I can imagine. This is how.

Your children take you for granted. And that’s good.
The thanklessness of parenthood can be really hard. We love our children, of course, but the constant giving, pouring, tending, and nurturing is a lot, especially when all we “get back” are tantrums, eye roles, and complaints about dinner. It’s only human to crave a sense of appreciation. And certainly, it’s our responsibility as parents to teach children about gratitude, and the importance of expressing our thanks.
But I think it’s also okay that our kids take us for granted. Actually, I think it’s great.
Because in us, they find their safety.
Their ability to fully exhale.
Their ability to simply be.
Their source of unconditional love.
Their rock.
Maybe it’s not that they don’t appreciate us. Maybe they appreciate us so much that we have become like oxygen or sunlight. Every day, we’re just…there. Without question, judgment, or hesitation.
They don’t understand that they might say “thank you” for that because they can’t imagine it any other way.
What a gift it is to be so trusted by our children that we are taken for granted.
