First day back in a month!!!

This past month, while I was recovering from a running injury, Jessie stayed home from work, to make my work days a little easier. But today she’s back and ready to go!!

I ASKED FOR HELP.

Whether that was from my partner, my siblings, my friends or even my therapist. It took me a few days to identify what I needed, but I relied on my community to carry me through a very tough few days.

Healing does not happen in isolation, and finding your people, makes difficult moments, slightly more tolerable.

Ooooo very scary stuff

A couple weeks ago I noticed some pretty intense pain on a run, and tried to push through it. To the point where I felt nauseous. I took some rest days, spoke with a coach I was working with, who happens to be a physical therapist, and wasn’t too worried. Fast forward, we’re in an orthopedic surgeons office getting a diagnosis of a stress reaction in the tibia.

In my mind, I thought, “okay no biggie, it’s basically shin splints, I can push through that.” Incorrect. In that appointment, I learned that the difference between a stress reaction vs fracture, is essentially, one long run, which, was supposed to be 15 miles that week.

While this is not what I’d hoped for, it’s been a great lesson in patience, acceptance and validation. Pushing our bodies to such extremes can be super cool and impressive, it can also be quite dangerous. Accepting where I’m at in recovery, and respecting my body’s limitations, has been a HARD lesson.

I often teach distress tolerance and radical acceptance with clients, and this has been encouraging me to put those skills to the test everyday.
Good luck to those running marathons this fall, you got this!

“You’re the only kid of mine who was in the prinicple’s office!” Frequent phrasing by my parents for the next 3 years. Trauma does funky things to kiddos

We’re at that point in marathon training where I simply cannot sit at my desk for Telehealth days. So to the office couch, comfy clothes on, and lock in.

Therapists are people, and our bodies get tired, need accommodations, etc. Especially when we do something physically demanding. And this is how I show up for my body, by adjusting how I physically come to Telehealth sessions.

How do you modify your set up to be accommodating to what your body needs?

We’re allowed to have bad moments, days or weeks. But how we move through them, matters.
