Free Clinic of Medina County

Free Clinic of Medina County Our mission is to provide free medical care to eligible people who live or work in Medina County

In the early 1990’s, Dr. Kim Bowen, an emergency room physician, traveled to Bosnia to provide medical care to those in need. Upon his return, a neighbor approached him because he was not feeling well. The neighbor was out of medications and unable to see a doctor due to having no medical insurance. Despite working two jobs, he was still unable to afford care or medications for a chronic health issue. This experience made Dr. Bowen realize that his own neighbors were in need of access to medical services. Determined to help those who had a job, but could still not afford health insurance and did not qualify for government assistance, he started the Parma Health Ministry in 1995. Once Dr. Bowen began working in Medina Hospital’s Emergency Department, he quickly became aware that Medina County had similar issues. Community members with no health insurance were coming to the ER for care because they could not afford to see a doctor. Dr. Bowen reached out to his peers, and Dr. John Surso, a local family physician actively involved in the community, quickly volunteered to assist in establishing a free clinic in Medina. They, along with several community members, began to develop the vision of the Medina Health Ministry. After three years of planning and fundraising, Dr. Bowen met with the clinic’s first patient on January 8th, 2004.

Just before Christmas, Medina philanthropist Norbert “Nobby” Lewandowski visited the Free Clinic of Medina County and presented Clinic Director Nancy Peacock with a check for $25,000.
He included a short note: “I have been fortunate to build an accounting firm in Medina, attend Kent State University and Case Western Reserve University throughout my career. In deep appreciation for the investment Free Clinic of Medina County has made to so many others in the community, I would like to thank the entire organization of physicians, nurses, volunteers, administrators and board of directors for their commitment.”
“I have included a donation of $25,000 as a gesture of recognition for the years Dr. Kim Bowen and the many others who have given so much to the organization. Please know that others in the community recognize the value and investment the Free Clinic of Medina County has made to improve the lives of so many.”
Peacock said she was honored by Lewandowski’s gift to the clinic and the recognition that his generous donation bestows on the organization.
“My heart is full with Nobby’s generosity as well as his kindness in providing such a meaningful donation to the most vulnerable neighbors and friends in our community,” she said.
The Free Clinic of Medina County is celebrating 21 years of service to eligible people who live or work in Medina County. To become a patient, call 330-764-9300 or visit fcomc.org
