The AAO recommends a first visit to the orthodontist at or by age 7 to establish a baseline.

Today we address the question....
🤔 Do adults have orthodontic treatment?

Yes! 🤩
Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids/teens even though it’s highly recommended by the AAO that kids are evaluated around age 7. In fact, approximately 35% of the patients in our office are adults!

🧐 What types of adults seek treatment?
Most of our adult patients can be categorized in one of the following ways:

1 - Adults who had previous treatment as a kid/teen but didn’t wear their retainers and things are shifting (!) in either a minor or a major way

2 - Adults who never had treatment as a teen and is finally ready to pursue treatment for themselves to improve bite issues or esthetics

3 - Adults without any prior treatment who were referred to us before any restorative work (implants, veneers, crowns, etc.) takes place or in conjunction with another speciality (perio, endo, OS, etc.) in order to prevent any further decline in the health of the patients mouth and/or to try to save the natural teeth they still have!

4 - Adults presenting with a surgical case in which the patient may or may not have had their jaw growth monitored by us over the years and is finally finished growing and ready for orthognathic surgery

🧑 🧑‍🦳 What about age?
We currently have adult patients ranging from 18 years old to 85 years old! Those in the 70+ range often present with traumatic occlusion or recent spaces that are best to close and want to maintain as much function as possible.

Anything else?
Some adult patients have had their children treated and are ready to do something for themselves; some adult patients dread the thought of orthodontic treatment but know it’s necessary for their health long term. Whether adults pursue treatment for functional or cosmetic reasons, orthodontic treatment can improve their quality of life through a more stable bite and confident smile.

🧐 Curious what to expect during your first visit to our office? Here’s what you can expect at Mellion Orthodontics:

Upon arrival, you’ll meet one of treatment coordinators who will review your dental and medical history and discuss your treatment goals. Together you’ll take a series of photographs of your teeth, take X-rays and complete a digital scan of your mouth (we are an impression-free office!).

👨‍⚕️ Next, you will meet with one of our board-certified orthodontists - Dr. Zach, Dr. Alex, or Dr. Joe Mellion! This family has been making smiles since 1980 and in addition to having lots of experience, each completed an orthodontic residency program after dental school. Dr. Zach and Dr. Alex have taught at Case Western Reserve University, sharing the latest advancements and technology with the next class of orthodontists! After a review of your records, an exam of your mouth will be completed by using a small mirror to see all of your teeth and evaluate how your bite fits together. From there, the doctors will explain the prescribed treatment options available to you based on their findings.

Throughout the appointment our team will answer any questions you have and ensure you are confident and comfortable in the prescribed treatment method outlined by our orthodontists!
