We're continuing with a series that helps to explain some terms you may frequently hear. This time, it's "copay".

A copay (or copayment) is a fixed amount paid at the time of service under your health insurance plan.

Copays may apply to:
• Primary care visits
• Specialist appointments
• Prescriptions
• Lab tests or blood work
• Imaging such as X-rays or MRIs
• Hospital services

Copay amounts vary depending on your insurance plan and whether a provider is in-network or out-of-network.

Copays are part of your out-of-pocket healthcare costs. You can always contact your insurance company to understand how much your copay will be for difference services.

As we continue celebrating National Activity Professionals Week, today we are proud to recognize Adrienne Belson, Activities Director and MDS Coordinator.

Adrienne and her family live in Lyndonville, and she has been a dedicated member of Orleans Community Health for an incredible 19 years. Her heart has always been with the elderly population, and she shares that what makes her role so special is the family-like atmosphere on North Wing and throughout the organization.

When people hear she works in activities, they often say, “Oh, so you play games all day.” While games are a small part of the job, Adrienne explains that activities professionals do so much more. They build meaningful relationships that help residents feel safe and comfortable. They sit hand in hand with residents during life’s most difficult moments. They create opportunities for community engagement through concerts, picnics, scenic drives, and meals out. They become advocates when residents may no longer have a voice, and often become part of their extended family.

Adrienne is deeply passionate about providing the highest level of care and ensuring residents have the best quality of life possible. She believes that living in a nursing home does not mean the end of living, and that there are always opportunities to bring joy, purpose, and connection.

Outside of work, Adrienne enjoys watching her oldest son perform on stage and cheering on her other son at football games.

She is grateful to be part of an organization filled with staff who care deeply for residents, supported by an administration that shows up for holidays, picnics, and even a game of euchre. She also credits the community for helping fund a bus that allows residents to stay connected beyond the facility. Seeing a resident light up while recognizing familiar places reminds her just how powerful those moments can be.

Adrienne’s compassion, dedication, and heart for service is something the residents and team members see daily.

As we continue highlighting our activities team, meet Angel Mackey. Angel is an Activities Assistant from Middleport, who also works in North Wing.

Angel has been part of the Orleans Community Health team for 1 1/2 years. After starting in dietary, she quickly built connections with residents and discovered her passion for the residents. When the opportunity to join the Activities Department became available, she was thrilled to step into a role that allows her to interact even more closely with residents each day.

What Angel enjoys most about her position is the opportunity to build meaningful, personal connections. She loves participating in activities that bring positive outcomes into the lives of residents and takes pride in being someone who can make them smile and provide support when they need it.

Angel would like the community to know that residents especially enjoy visits from dogs. Seeing and petting a friendly pup brings joy to many, and community members are always welcome to bring their dogs by for a visit.

We want to recognize that Angel is currently pursuing a master’s degree in social work and is deeply passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.

In her personal life, Angel stays busy with her two sons, ages 9 and 14. She enjoys cooking, swimming, walking her dogs along the canal, and caring for her growing collection of plants. She enjoys spending her summers gardening in the sunshine.

Like so many of us, what Angel loves most about the area is the strong sense of care and respect within the small community, and the genuine compassion shown toward both residents and staff.

Did you know, it's National Activity Professionals Week? This week is an opportunity to recognize the staff who design activities and provide an enhanced quality of life for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This week, we're taking an opportunity to highlight our activities team who goes above and beyond for the residents of North Wing. First up is Lyndonville resident Anna Lewis, who serves as an Activity Leader.

Anna began working at OCH on October 13, 2020, as an Activities Assistant. This year, she celebrates five years of service, and in June 2025, she stepped into her current role as Activity Leader.

What Anna enjoys most about her position is the variety each day brings. From creative programming to spontaneous moments of joy, she loves finding new ways for the activities team to sprinkle fun into residents’ daily routines.

Anna wants the community to know that the Activities Department is always welcoming volunteers. Residents truly thrive when community members share their time, talents, and companionship.

Professionally, Anna is passionate about providing residents with the highest quality of life possible. She enjoys learning about their life stories, describing herself as an “old soul” who often prefers time with residents over people her own age.

Outside of work, Anna enjoys reading, theatre, playing slow-pitch softball, cheering on the Bills, Sabres, and Blue Jays, and spending time with her dog, Billie.

Anna says what she loves most about the surrounding area is the close-knit community and the many people willing to help and support one another.

As we know, the Governor has declared a State of Emergency for the entire state. With snow already falling and freezing temperatures, take the appropriate steps to prepare for the next couple of days. Here are five initial steps you can take before things get worse:
1. Continue to monitor weather forecasts and alerts from trusted local sources.
2. Prepare an emergency kit with water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a phone charger.
3. Keep your vehicle’s gas tank at least half full and store blankets, a shovel, and jumper cables in your car.
4. Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip slightly to prevent freezing.
5. Check heating systems, fireplaces, and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure proper operation.

Over the next month, we’ll be sharing helpful information designed to empower patients with knowledge about their healthcare. Topics will include health insurance basics, copays, deductibles, patient responsibility, and more. Whether you receive care at an Orleans Community Health location or elsewhere, this is valuable information for everyone to understand.

First up: the basics of health insurance.

Health insurance can feel confusing - especially when it comes to understanding copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. Over the coming weeks, we’ll break these topics down in simple, easy-to-understand ways, including:
✔ Copays
✔ Deductibles
✔ Patient responsibility

Our goal is to help our community feel confident, prepared, and informed before arriving for care.

Do you feel warmer looking at this image? We're only about 4 months away from green grass, sunshine, and warmer temperatures. In the meantime, remember the importance of checking on family, friends, and neighbors during these cold days. If you or someone you know needs a local place to go, Lee-Whedon Memorial Library is a warming center in Medina. If you're in Albion, consider going to Hoag Library.

Stay safe and think warm thoughts.
