Once a magnet is installed, its field will be away from ideal specifications and further distorted by the presence of metal in pipes, wires, ducts, and structural beams in the immediate environment, and the fringe fields of nearby scanners. Shimming makes the main magnetic field more homogenous by affixing pieces of ferromagnetic pellets within the scanner bore (passive) or directing currents through specialized coils (active) to improve homogeneity and ensure the best image quality.
