For 25 years Iโ€™ve worked in a variety of healthcare settings-the Boston and Bedford VA, MGH, and Brigham and Womenโ€™s Hospital.

Iโ€™ve owned a private practice for 20 years, and a habit coaching business for 10 years.

Yes. Many years ago my email inbox was out of control.

It was terrible.

I constantly felt overwhelmed, scattered, and behind in lifeโ€™s administrative tasks.

One day I YET AGAIN had to ask a friend to find me an imortant school email and I was mortified!!!

I realized I simply had to make my email a priority and get a handle on it.

If you have read the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, you know that he talks about our habits as identities. For example, "I am someone who leaves the dishes in the sink overnight."

(gulp. yes I am :-) )

James suggests that it is easier to change a habit when you think about the person you want to be... the person who identifies as someone who conducts their day a certain way.

Well, I admit I used to be a "snooze til the last possible moment kind of person". Mornings were NOT pretty in my house. If you have met me in the past few years you may find this hard to believe but trust me! It's the truth.

That is, it WAS the truth until I realized it didn't have to be that way. Little by little I made changes to become the person I am today, someone who intentionally creates a peaceful morning.

Those fitness instructors say it all the time, right???

When we got the bike I was terrified of spinning and totally intimidated. I had no interest in even trying it- we got it for hubby.

But as I saw so many people LOVING their spin workouts and showing how obsessed they were, I gotta say, I was intrigued.

There is no way I would have had the courage to try a class live with others around me, but in the comfort of my own home, I could embark on a gradual progression.

I started with a 20 minute ride and had no expectation of keeping up with the recommended pace and resistance. I just let myself get used to the feel of the bike and learn the proper form.

Then I graduated to 30 minutes- and found my groove. Little by little I challenged myself to keep up with at least the low end of the recommended cadence and resistance range.

And then I decided it was time to graduate to 45 minute rides. I really did not think I could do that.

So I applied my best habit forming techniques:

1). I set out to just SIT on the bike for 45 minutes. That meant I did my usual 30 minute all out ride, and then pedaled comfortably for another 15 just to get used to a 45 minute session.

2) Then I added 5 additional minutes of all out riding, and then finished with 10 minutes of easy riding. That was not much harder than 30 minutes.

3) I decided I was ready for 45 and now I can ride all out for 45 minutes as if it were 30- no problem at all!

I'm SUPER proud of myself!
I didn't HAVE to do this, but I love to challenge myself and see how I can progress from not being able to doing something to now being able.

Someone in my time management class taught me how to set up a widget and itโ€™s genius!

My master todo list is in my planner which I donโ€™t always have with me. So I add items to this temporary list and then transfer them to my planner later.

No more texting myself, sending emails to myself, writing on sticky notes, or random pieces of paper or mail ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Sports are in high gear and weโ€™ve got meals to get on the table.

Every step you can simplify helps!!
Last night I picked up a rotisserie chicken from Fresh Start (you can call them early in the day and theyโ€™ll have it ready to go, hot!) made Trader Joeโ€™s frozen rice and had roasted asparagus from the night before. Easy peasy on a late night of soccer.

While I was cleaning up I prepped overnight oats for this morning. Some days I take the time to make a full breakfast and other days itโ€™s nice to just have it ready! I added frozen peaches and almonds in the morning and DONE in 60 seconds.

As life gets busier DONโ€™T let health sink down the priority list. You just gotta get strategic!
