What started it all...
Welcome to Rustic Retreat. This guest home is part of our 10 acre ranch in Meeker, OK. Just like everyone in this world has a “story” of their life, Rustic Retreat and our family has one too. Me and my husband grew up in the surrounding cities of Oklahoma City, me in Moore/South OKC and my husband in Del City. We met January 2004 and married June 2005. We had an instant family, since I brought my very young first born into the marriage. Back then, we had hopes and dreams of one day moving our daughter somewhere that she can have horses. Her love of horses started at 2 years old and has not stopped. Then, came our second daughter and that dream was put on hold. We raised our daughters in the city until our oldest was 10 years old. You see, the good Lord wanted us out East because he provided my husband with a great job in Shawnee, OK. So, East we headed to Harrah, OK. Growing up in the city, I was told all kinds of horror stories about living in the country and that I would hate it. So, Harrah was the farthest I was willing to go at that time...baby steps ya’ll. ;O) So then, we felt the need to move and save money, we decided to sell our beautiful Harrah home and move into an old rental home in Choctaw, that was located on a beautiful horse ranch that was also a place for therapeutic riding. Score!! We can live cheaper and help with people with disabilities and be around horses 24/7. We stayed there for a year, saved up some money and purchased a home in Choctaw on the other side of that ranch so we could continue helping at the Ranch. That home was where we rescued our first horse, Spirit. We gave her to my oldest as a Christmas gift. She was in love. I guess you could say “ignorance is bliss” because we have learned a lot from Spirit! So, then we rescued a mini horse named Whinny. She was cute but she didn’t seem to like us. However, to our surprise, Whinny was pregnant and one day she gave birth to a mini mule, we named Spartan. As a lot of people would experience, we desired more land and space for us, our kids and our fur babies. We looked for homes in the Bethel Acres, Tecumseh and Meeker, but always seemed to come back to the Meeker area. We love the trees and land out here. One day, my oldest daughter showed us a property for sale north of Meeker, OK. The land had two houses on it! One main house, then a smaller guest house. I told my daughter there was no way we could afford two houses. That’s expensive and craziness, but something prompted me to want to see it. So, we drove by...the two houses were adorable and the property was pretty. We had said in order to move, we had to have at least five acres. This property had almost ten! So, we made an appointment to see it. We fell in love with the back acreage...it already had four wheeler trails through the trees and when we walked the whole property...it felt HUGE to us. Then, we went inside the main house that we would live in, while continuing to raise our children. It was really cute when we walked in. I could picture us living here! Then, we went to the guest home. I liked it better than the main home, but with one bathroom, there was no way it would work for us and our kids. I started having dreams of what we could do with the guest home and property. We decided to purchase this property and have lived here in the main home for 2 years so far. We actually sat on the guest home for 1.5 years not knowing what to do with it. The kids would utilize it a little but mostly it was storage for all our junk! Looking around at the home, it hit me one day. This house is too cute to be sitting here unused. What could we use it for? I want to bless others with this home, but how? A friend of ours suggested renting it out as a vacation home. That’s it!!! So, May 2019, after collecting items to furnish the home with, we opened our doors of the guest home to others, in order to give them a private, peaceful and country vacation home. Our hope is that it can be a blessing to all that steps through it’s doors. We hope it feels warm, inviting and relaxing to all its guests. If you look on Airbnb or VRBO, you will see reviews for the home. People have been so kind with their reviews, it really warms my heart when I see how much others enjoy our little oasis. This has been a joy to us and we hope it continues to be a joy to others. I am thankful for this little home, that we never thought we could afford and thankful that the Lord gave us this opportunity to spread a little joy and comfort while guests are traveling our state. Oklahoma is a great state to visit and to raise your children. The people are warm and truly enjoy interacting and embracing visitors. We hope that’s the experience you will have while staying at Rustic Retreat. Happy Trails!!
