Your eye exam is a conversation, not a one-way visit 👁️

Knowing what to ask can help you better understand your eye health and feel confident about your care. Simple questions like:
• What conditions are being checked
• How often your eyes should be monitored
• Whether anything has changed since your last visit
• What symptoms to watch for at home

These conversations help guide long-term eye health and personalized care.

Save this post for your next appointment or share it with someone who might find it helpful.

Family history plays a meaningful role in eye health 👁️

If glaucoma runs in your family, your risk may be higher, even if your vision feels normal. Knowing your personal and family health history helps guide how often your eyes should be monitored and what your doctor looks for during exams.

Awareness isn’t about worry, it’s about informed care and long-term protection.

Your eye exam looks at more than how well you see 👁️

During a comprehensive exam, your eyes can reveal early signs of overall health changes, including:

• Diabetes indicators: Changes in blood vessels at the back of the eye can be one of the earliest signs of diabetic eye disease.
• High blood pressure signs: Narrowed or damaged retinal blood vessels may reflect circulation or blood pressure concerns.
• Thyroid-related eye changes: Eye bulging, dryness, or alignment changes can signal thyroid-related conditions.
• Neurological red flags: Certain vision changes may point to nerve or brain-related issues that need further evaluation.

That’s why routine eye care matters, even when your vision feels “fine.”
Early awareness supports long-term eye and body health.

As we age, it’s normal for our eyes to change but not every vision change should be ignored.

Here’s how to tell the difference:
• Gradual difficulty reading up close can be a normal part of aging
• Sudden or unexplained blurriness is not and should be checked
• Occasional dryness can happen, especially with screen use
• Ongoing irritation, pain, or discomfort deserves attention

The key difference is change over time versus change that happens quickly or doesn’t improve.
When something feels off, it’s always okay to ask.

If you notice new or persistent vision changes, scheduling an eye exam can help provide clarity and peace of mind.

Many people avoid eye exams simply because they’re unsure what happens during the visit.

When it comes to glaucoma, testing is straightforward, comfortable, and designed to catch changes early, often before symptoms appear.

A comprehensive glaucoma screening may include:
• Measuring eye pressure
• Examining the optic nerve
• Checking peripheral (side) vision
• Imaging the retina for subtle changes

These tools help your doctor understand the full picture of your eye health and protect your vision long-term.

You can feel fine, see clearly, and still have changes happening beneath the surface. That’s why eye exams go beyond reading letters on a chart, they check eye pressure and optic nerve health, too.

👁️ Early awareness makes a difference.

01/13/2026

Not all glaucoma risk looks the same and many people don’t realize they fall into a higher-risk category.

Age, family history, certain health conditions, medications, and even ethnicity can increase your chances of developing glaucoma. Because changes often happen gradually, regular eye exams are the best way to stay ahead of it.

If any of these risk factors sound familiar, it may be time to schedule a screening.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, a reminder that protecting your vision often starts before symptoms appear.

Glaucoma is known as the “silent thief of sight” because it can develop gradually, without noticeable changes to vision. Once vision loss occurs, it can’t be reversed but with early detection and proper care, progression can often be slowed.

That’s why routine, comprehensive eye exams are so important. They allow your eye doctor to evaluate eye pressure, optic nerve health, and other indicators that can reveal glaucoma early, when treatment is most effective.

If you have a family history of glaucoma, are over 60, or have underlying health conditions, regular screenings are especially important.
