This past snow storm was a doozie! Odds are it is not the last we will see of the fluffy white stuff. If snow removal took a toll on your body this past weekend, call us for some much needed TLC. (781) 665-1497.

If you managed to get through unscathed, here are some tips from the American Chiropractic Association to keep it that way:

Shoveling can strain “deconditioned” muscles between your shoulders and in your upper back, lower back, buttocks and legs. Do some warm-up stretching before you grab the shovel.

Layer clothing to keep your muscles warm and flexible.

When you do shovel, push the snow straight ahead. Walk it to the snowbank–don’t try to throw it.

Bend your knees to lift when shoveling. Let the muscles of your legs and arms take some of the strain of shoveling off your back.

Take frequent rest breaks to take the strain off your muscles. A fatigued body asks for injury.

Stop shoveling if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or get very tired. You may need emergency medical assistance.

Regular chiropractic care can keep help you be prepared for what Mother Nature may have in store for us.

Tips for Healthy Gift Wrapping

Stretching keeps muscles looseand reduces stiffness. Gift wrapping can be a joyful part of the holiday season but often comes with an unexpected downside—back pain.Many people sit on the floor, lean forward for long hours, and twist into awkward positions while wrapping gifts, strainingmuscles and ligaments. However, with a few mindful adjustments, you can keep your back healthy and pain-free!

Elevate Your Workspace
Use a sturdy table instead ofsitting on the floor. This keepsyour spine in a neutral positionand reduces strain on yourlower back.

Choose a Supportive Chair
If you must sit, use a chairwith good lumbar support. Ifneeded, add a small pillowto support the natural curveof your lower back.

Take Breaks Frequently
Set a timer to stand, stretch, andmove every 20-30 minutes.

Keep Supplies Within Reach
Arrange all of your supplieslike wrapping paper, tape,scissors, and bows withinarm’s reach to avoid twistingor overreaching.

Use Proper Lifting Techniques
When moving large or heavyboxes of gifts, bend at yourknees, not your waist. Keep thebox close to your body and liftwith your legs.

Alternate Positions
Switch between sitting andstanding while wrapping toavoid overloading any onegroup of muscles.
