Toys I love as a developmental optometrist: building blocks. Tried and true building blocks help children develop depth judgements, understanding of spatial relationships between objects, eye hand coordination, understanding of form constancy and so much more.

The Melissa & Doug Wooden Building Blocks Set offers endless opportunities for hands-on play and learning. With 100 solid wood blocks in four bright colors and nine classic shapes, toddlers and preschoolers can stack, balance, and build in countless combinations. Each block is sized just right fo...

Toys I love as a developmental optometrist: the rebounder! These are typically intended for baseball and lacrosse players to hone their catching and fielding skills, but what if your child struggles to catch or throw accurately? You can use these indoors or outdoors with light bean bags instead of the hard balls used in more formal sports training. Just remember the age old rule: keep your eye on the ball (or bean bag) to catch it.

Let's take a look at some toys I love as a developmental optometrist. I usually DON'T recommend computer or VR, but DK makes these cool books and VR sets that provide a real stereoscopic (3D) image that require and stimulate eye teaming (a skill we train) to enjoy. As always, we recommend 2 hours or less on ALL screens per day for kids 5-10 years old. https://www.mindware.orientaltrading.com/dk-virtual-reality-animals-gift-set-a2-14377903.fltr?utm_campaign=FB%20%7C%20MW%20%7C%20CUSTOMER%20%7C%20ASC%20%7C%20VALUE%20NEW%20-%20Copy&utm_medium=display&BP=MWYAY25&utm_id=6841210520336&utm_term=6841210519936&tw_adid=6841210520136&cm_mmc=Responsory-_-0BAO0BAO-_-Facebook-_-dynamic&ad_id=6841210520136&adset_id=6841210519936&tw_source=fb&campaign_id=6841210520336&utm_source=facebook&utm_content=6841210520136

Please get exposure to natural sunlight every morning and avoid blue light from screens for the 2 hours before you want to sleep. It works wonders for your sleep/wake cycle!

Playing these games is only part of the equation in building executive function. The real goal is for a player to identify their weaknesses and devise strategies to improve performance in the next game. Afterwards, ask questions like,
"What helped you stay calm during the stressful parts?"
"What might you change next time?"
It's always best to give the player the opportunity to think of strategy and plans for improvement on their own. It gives the ability to plan and adapt when no is around to solve the problem.

Surprising, but not surprising. Development of eye movement control is crucial for reading success. If the eyes don't aim at it, get it clear and single, the brain can't process it.

Our developmental visual evaluation assesses dozens of visual skills necessary for readers of every age. Don't wait. Give us a call.

Fantastic advice!

When was the last time your family laughed without a screen between you?

Reducing screen time isn’t about taking things away—it’s about creating space for connection.
When kids spend less time on devices, they sleep better, focus more easily, and enjoy real-world play that builds confidence and creativity.

Every small step counts — a family walk, a board game, or simply talking about your day. Those little moments shape stronger bonds and happier hearts.
