The term "trigger point"came from a physician in 1942, Dr. Janet Travell. She described finding with the following characteristics:
1. A localized pain in the skeletal muscle or fascia that was not correlated to injury, degeneration, or infection.
2. The point of pain can be manually felt as a "knot" or noduce in the band of the muscle and elicits a twitch response to stimulation.
3. This palpation of the trigger point is repeatable reproduction of the patient's complaint of pain, which pain radiates in a manner that is typical of the muscle with the trigger point.
These nodules are "locked" or compressed and respond to repeated deep pressure massage across the bands to improve blood flow and remove trapped acids that are irritating those spots.
