Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach does not empty properly, causing nausea and discomfort for patients like Brittany Askew, whose gastroparesis was so severe she was not able to eat for days on end. Brittany is feeling better than ever today thanks to a procedure called Enterra, which works by using an implanted neurostimulator, similar to a Pacemaker, to send mild electrical pulses to the stomach to help manage symptoms of gastroparesis. Saint Francis is the only area hospital that offers the procedure.

Local 24 sat down with Dr. Alan Hammond, a general surgeon with Saint Francis Medical Partners, who performed Brittany’s procedure, to learn more about how it all works. Watch the segment here.

St. Francis is the only hospital in the Mid-South offering a procedure for gastroparesis.

While enjoying the water can be a fun summer activity, it is important to keep in mind that drowning is the leading cause of death, other than birth defects, for children ages 1 to 4. Dr. Michael Washington, ER director at Saint Francis-Memphis, sat down with Local 24 to share some tips for parents to keep kids safe in and around water.
