Happy Independence Day from Memorial Planning! As we celebrate the founding of our nation, we’d like to recognize the rich history of one the locations in our network, Kirk & Nice Funeral Home and its role in the Revolutionary War.

More than 100 years before it became the Kirk & Nice we know today, Jacob Knorr founded the business as a “joiner” (carpentry) shop in 1761. Jacob was a prominent architect and builder in Philadelphia’s Germantown – and on occasion, he would make custom coffins for locals.

Though business prospered, in 1777, the Battle of Germantown brought the Revolutionary War to Philadelphia’s front door and left hundreds of casualties. After the battle, Jacob rose to the occasion to provide coffins and bury fallen troops in an act that would designate him as the local undertaker.

Today, 58 Continental Army men – America’s first soldiers – are at rest in the historic Upper Burial Ground of Philadelphia. The old joiner shop continued to operate with Knorr carving his way to the future of community service and deathcare.

In honor of Juneteenth, we would like to recognize Dr. Sarah Fraser. Born in Jan. 1850, her childhood home was a major stop on the Underground Railroad where she and her parents helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom.

According to the Journal of the National Medical Association, even as a child, Sarah helped treat injuries and illnesses that people obtained during their escape. This remarkable work provided a foundation for her future: Sarah’s desire to help others drove her to earn a medical degree and become the fourth African American female physician in the country.

We honor Dr. Sarah Fraser and her remarkable legacy. Her dedication to emancipation, healing, and family are all powerful reminders of what we pay tribute to on this day.

Our Story

Forest Hill has served the Memphis area since 1888. We believe memories serve as living tributes to the departed, but also play an important part in the process of grieving. For this reason, we take great care in arranging personalized funeral services to create a meaningful celebration of a person who meant so much. Located close to Graceland, Forest Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park Midtown is one of the oldest cemeteries in Memphis, with one of the first abbeys ever built. The plethora of trees make for an arborist’s dream. Forest Hill Midtown offers in-ground burial, lawn crypts, mausoleums, traditional funerals, personalized funerals, memorial and graveside services, various cremation options, and military honors for Veterans.
