Prevention Starts With a Check-In

🫶 Prevention isn’t only about substances, it’s also about connection. During seasons when routines change and celebrations highlight togetherness, many people feel more isolated than ever. A simple text, call, or knock on the door can reduce stress, prevent risky coping behaviors, and remind someone they matter.

At Memphis Area Prevention Coalition, we promote Prevention by strengthening community bonds and encouraging early support before challenges turn into crises.

Preventing Misuse Starts at Home

🔍 Did you know? Most first-time substance misuse begins with easy access at home. Unsecured prescription drugs, leftover pain medications, or alcohol that’s not monitored can put youth at serious risk. At Memphis Area Prevention Coalition (MAPC), we work with families and communities to reduce access, raise awareness, and prevent early use before it starts.

👉 Take action today:
• Lock up medications
• Dispose of unused prescriptions safely
• Have open conversations with your teens

🚫 Just because a drug is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Alcohol, to***co, and prescription medications continue to cause more preventable deaths in the U.S. than many illegal drugs combined. Misuse happens when substances are used too often, too early, or outside of medical guidance. That’s why MAPC focuses on Prevention for ALL substances, not just illegal ones. We provide community education, school presentations, and training for parents to help them understand:

✔️ The risks behind “legal” substances
✔️ How early use increases addiction risk
✔️ Warning signs to watch for
✔️ How to talk with youth about making healthy choices

Together, we can create a safer, healthier Shelby County.

Prevention Is a Community Effort

💙 Substance misuse doesn’t happen in isolation, and Prevention shouldn’t either. Whether it’s fentanyl in counterfeit pills, misuse of prescription meds, or rising v**e use among teens, the challenges our community faces require a united response.

At Memphis Area Prevention Coalition (MAPC), we bring together schools, faith organizations, healthcare providers, law enforcement, youth groups, and families to reduce substance use before it starts.

Our work includes:
🔹 Evidence-based prevention programs
🔹 Youth education and community outreach
🔹 Support for parents and caregivers
🔹 Local data and resources to guide action

When the community stands together, we save lives.

🌟 Prevention begins before a crisis ever happens

Most substance use, whether it’s illegal drugs like fentanyl or legal substances like alcohol and to***co, starts early. That’s why education and early conversations matter. Teens who understand the risks of substance misuse are up to 50% less likely to experiment. A single talk at home can reduce harm, delay first use, and protect their long-term health.

At Memphis Area Prevention Coalition (MAPC), we work across 12 community sectors to empower families with evidence-based tools, trainings, and resources to keep young people safe. When parents, schools, and communities unite, Prevention becomes powerful.
