Depending on the age of the child, they will need LOTS of scaffolding to help them achieve the goal and avoid the natural consequence.
In our walk to school example:
- We’re hands-on for essentially every step (at 5, with ADHD, her ability to do complete steps independently is more like a 3-4 year old level)
- We use Time Timers to help her gauge how much time she’s got left
- She has a checklist on our where she can mark off tasks and earn rewards (dress, eat breakfast, plate to sink, brush teeth, shoes & socks)
Sometimes despite our best efforts, the natural consequence still plays out. But she learns from it!
Also, related PSA, your kids shouldn’t be losing recess at school!!! Talk to the school if that’s happening regularly.
