Help future healthcare providers while getting paid as a simulated patient!

A simulated patient (SP) is a healthy person who has been coached to simulate a patient (or family member) according to a variety of case scenarios for the teaching and evaluation of healthcare learners.

We are looking for SPs who can work in person at the UTHSC campus. We recruit SPs of diverse backgrounds, and a variety of ages (18+ years old). Pay is $20/hour. Temporary position and not benefit-eligible and not a full or a part-time job, but it does provide a regular, year-round gig. SPs do not have a set schedule; they typically are scheduled for shifts M-F during business hours (7am-5:30pm). Many SPs work at least 8 hours a month (if not more). We are looking for SPs who can work with us for at least 12 months.

SPs offer learners from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and health professions the opportunity to practice their communication and interpersonal skills, medical interviewing, and noninvasive physical examination in a safe, immersive learning environment at our state-of-the-art simulation center in Memphis.

During simulations, SPs portray not only the medical history and symptoms but the body language, emotional and personality characteristics of the role.

SPs are both actors and non-actors, are trained to consistently reproduce a role multiple times a day, must multi-task by portraying a role while also accurately recalling what occurred to complete an evaluation and provide feedback to learners.

Invited group auditions/interviews are July 22, 23 and August 11. If hired , required paid, in-person, orientation is: September 23, 24, 25, all day, each day. We hire new SPs only once or twice a year, so apply now! To start the process, fill out the form on the website – the link is at the bottom of the SP page. https://uthsc.edu/simulation/standardized-patient.php

CHIPS has had the pleasure of hosting students from the Memphis Medical District Collaborative’s Career Launch Academy for an immersive, hands-on healthcare experience at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

These rising healthcare leaders explored our state-of-the-art simulation spaces, interacted with medical technology, and got a behind-the-scenes look at how clinical training comes to life. The Career Launch Academy, in partnership with Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, offers high school juniors and seniors a paid opportunity to explore healthcare careers, gain soft skills, and even earn CNA certification.

We’re proud to support programs that empower Memphis youth and open doors to meaningful careers in healthcare. The future is bright—and we saw it walk straight through our doors.

Huge thanks to UTHSC Campus Recreation for putting on the "Guy'd To Wellness: Men's Mental Health Month" event today! Some of the guys from our CHIPS team had a fantastic time destressing and focusing on their well-being.

It was an amazing event filled with fun activities like basketball, co****le, giant Jenga, and mobility sessions, all geared towards men's overall wellness and mental health. It's so important to prioritize these conversations and create spaces for men to connect and de-stress. We loved seeing everyone in blue 🔵, showing support for Men's Mental Health Awareness Month!

Last week, members of our CHIPS education department Jamie Pitt, Tim Dotson, Sophia Mosher, and Amy Rush had the privilege of both attending and presenting at the Association of SP Educators - ASPE annual conference in beautiful Montréal, Canada.

The sessions we participated in were rich with insights, focusing on transforming simulation practice into scholarly contributions, strategies for evaluating and diversifying our case bank, effective feedback and debriefing practices, and the evolving role of AI in our deeply human-centered work. And getting to share our wins and challenges with our community of simulation practitioners was energizing and encouraging. We are fortunate to be part of such an inclusive, forward-thinking, and inspiring community of educators and we’re excited to apply these insights to our work at CHIPS.

We left feeling inspired to honor, respect, and partner with simulated participants (SPs) and the recognition that behind every SP is a dedicated SP educator and operations staff member—working behind the scenes—to ensure safety, realism, and meaningful learning experiences. These contributions are essential, yet too often go unrecognized.

The conference reminded us that:
- Language matters: Let’s stop saying we “use” SPs. We're partnering with SPs—they are not tools to be used.
- Honoring hidden labor matters: Let’s recognize SP educators, SPs, and Operations staff as subject matter experts, researchers, and co-authors. This expertise is foundational to the success of simulation-based education!
