Drug shortages are an ongoing challenge across the healthcare system, requiring a proactive and collaborative approach to ensure patient safety.

By understanding trends, recognizing key risk factors effecting pediatric patients, and implementing robust, system-based risk mitigation strategies, all pediatric pharmacists can play a vital role in safeguarding patients from harm due to drug shortages.

June 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day! Did you know that patients with Sickle Cell Disease need to receive extra vaccines due to their decreased splenic function? In addition to the standard childhood vaccines, additional doses of vaccines like meningitis and pneumococcal are required and are given at different times.

Pharmacists can help ensure patients with SCD are fully protected by recommending appropriate vaccines on the correct schedule.

If you have questions about vaccines, talk to your pharmacist or primary care provider today!

Thank you to students Julie Dang and Vanessa Ricci from University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy for this week’s VaxFacts.

🌟 **Happy National Safety Month!** 🌟
Did you know June is National Safety Month? It's the perfect time to learn how to stay safe while having fun! Whether you're at home, school, or playing outside, these tips will help you stay safe and sound! 🏡🎒

Safety Tips for Kids:

1. Wear Your Helmet! 🚴‍♂️
When riding your bike, skateboard, or scooter, always wear your helmet to protect your head. Safety first!

2. Look Both Ways!🚦
Before crossing the street, always stop, look left, right, and left again to make sure no cars are coming.

3. Stay Away from Strangers! 🚶‍♀️
If someone you don’t know approaches you, stay away and find a trusted adult. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

4. Keep Your Toys Safe! 🎮
Make sure your toys are not broken or damaged. Broken toys can hurt you, so check them out before you play!

5. Stay Hydrated!💧
Always drink plenty of water when you’re outside playing. Hydration helps you stay healthy and energized!

6. Stop, Drop, and Roll! 🔥
If your clothes catch fire, remember to stop, drop to the ground, and roll to put it out!

Remember, safety is super important, and it’s all about making smart choices to protect yourself and your friends. Stay safe, have fun, and keep smiling! 😄
