It is an exciting time for our program! Since Dr. Ramona Phinehas stepped into the role of Program Director in April 2022, we’ve embraced a period of vibrant transformation. Under her leadership—and with the dynamic vision of Dr. Alexa Swailes, our newest Associate Program Director—we’ve introduced innovative changes that elevate our residents’ experience both in and out of the clinical setting. We’ve expanded our faculty to include experts in academic medicine and research, appointed a dedicated Research Director, and increased the size of our resident cohort—creating more collaborative, energized teams. Most importantly, our residents are thriving. Their happiness, engagement, and personal development are at the heart of everything we do. People with a United Purpose
Our faculty and residents reflect a broad spectrum of backgrounds and experiences, all united by a commitment to improving women’s health in underserved communities throughout Tennessee. As a resident here, you'll be part of a mission-driven team focused on delivering innovative, patient-centered care with empathy and excellence. A Rich and Varied Training Experience
We offer hands-on training across both public and private hospital settings, private practices, and specialized clinics. From early on, you’ll gain exposure to a wide range of patient populations and clinical scenarios. Our growing selection of electives—including those beyond the Memphis-Shelby County area—offers residents the flexibility to tailor their experiences based on their passions and career goals. You’ll rotate through all the major subspecialties: Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Urogynecology. Regional One Health—our primary training site—is a High-Risk Obstetrics Center of Excellence, and home to a new Gynecologic Oncology practice led by renowned physician Dr. John Schorge. We’ve also expanded our Center for High-Risk Pregnancy, Menopause Clinic, and HRA-based HPV/Dysplasia care. Innovation in Learning
In addition to comprehensive subspecialty training, residents enjoy access to nontraditional learning experiences such as transgender care, pelvic floor therapy, birthing center care, obstetric genetics, critical care in oncology, and pediatric/adolescent gynecology. Exposure to midwifery care is also part of our curriculum. We currently offer fellowships in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology, and our new Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowship. All our fellowships are ACGME accredited and offer an exceptional fellowship experience. Resident-Centered Culture
We believe the best training happens when residents feel supported, heard, and empowered. Our leadership team takes resident feedback seriously, continually refining the curriculum and clinical experience based on their input. Graduates of our program leave not only well-prepared for independent practice or fellowship training but also equipped with a strong foundation in clinical acumen, surgical skill, and leadership. Your Future Starts Here
If you’re looking for a program that blends academic rigor with a nurturing, inclusive environment—where you’ll be challenged to grow and encouraged to thrive—we invite you to join us. Discover the difference of a program where residents don’t just succeed—they flourish.

Congratulations to Dr. Kaleb Noruzi! He has been selected as the Top Resident as Teacher for Block E (7/28/25-9/3/25). Here is what the medical students had to say about Dr. Noruzi:
"Dr. Noruzi was practically left alone to handle evals the entire time I was on L&D. Things got crazy there, and even though he’s only an Intern, I felt he handled it with a ton of grace. He is very clinically advanced and really knows his stuff for his stage of training, so he was able to answer all of my questions easily. He was very kind and respectful toward the patients. He allowed me to see patients on my own, come up with a plan (with guidance), and write my notes. He was great to work with.”
“Dr. Noruzi is a super hard working and great teacher. He is efficient at his job and is great at communicating with patients and students. He is very nice and makes the student feel welcome.”
"Dr. Noruzi was so great to work with (I worked with him in EVAL). Even though it was so busy and he had so much on his plate, he still took time out of his day to go over fetal heart tracings, how to do and interpret an afi and growth scan. I truly learned so much on my shifts with him. He gave me very helpful feedback on my notes as well.”
Great work Dr. Noruzi! We are so proud of you!

Regional One Health is the only hospital in Shelby County offering a groundbreaking clinical trial for patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer. Dr. John Schorge, Chief of the OB/GYN Service at Regional One Health and Program Co-Leader for Clinical Research at University of Tennessee Health Science Center Cancer Center, said the trial is positive for both patients and the health care system: “We’re able to offer something to our patients in the Mid-South that previously didn’t exist. That is what sets a hospital like Regional One Health apart and elevates the profile of a growing oncology center like Regional One Health Cancer Care.”

Under the leadership of Interim Chair, Claudette J. Shephard, MD, Program Director, Danielle L. Tate, MD, along with the assistance of Ms. Paula Odom, Program Manager, the mission of the OBGYN Residency Training Program is to educate residents in the entire breadth of the discipline of obstetrics and gynecology, and to foster a lifelong commitment to the promotion of women’s health care.
The four-year training program was first accredited at UTHSC in 1970 and has continued accreditation by the ACGME. Our program welcomes nine new interns from a pool of more than 700 applications each year through the N**P and we have become one of the more desirable locations to undergo training in the country. Our residents come from all regions of the United States and international schools. The program searches for well-rounded students with superlative academic records, a passion for OBGYN, and a drive to serve the underserved. Prospective applicants must be selfless, motivated, and compassionate, with an understanding of issues endemic to the Mid-South, and a determination to find answers in complicated cases.
UTHSC OBGYN residents, once accepted, rotate through Low-Risk Obstetrics, Benign Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Surgery Intensive Care Unit, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Urogynecology, and Ambulatory Services. It is a training experience aimed at providing residents with all the skills needed to succeed in any OB/GYN situation. While training is based at Regional One Health, residents gain experience in hospitals across the Mid-South, including Baptist Women’s, Methodist, and the Memphis VA Medical Center.
Residents in their third year are given the opportunity to present original research before a group of instructors and peers at the Annual Resident Research Forum. National and international guest lecturers are invited to judge the research each year. The diversity among our patients, students, residents, and faculty is truly an asset. We have a supportive family of residents and faculty, in an environment that facilitates a balance of learning and living for the young physician, making this an attractive place to train.
Additionally, the department organizes the Fetal and Neonatal Imaging Conference and the Contemporary Issues in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CIOG) Conference, both national conferences. The annual CIOG Conference is targeted to generalists, residents, nurse practitioners, midwives, and primary care physicians. It is held in Destin, Florida, and 2019 marks the 33rd anniversary of this conference. National and international speakers take part in both conferences.
