In honor of the New Year, we are taking a new look at someof our CPAP Success Stories - the 1st being Miguel Duncan's -
Only 6 weeks of CPAP therapy & Miguel Duncan, our latest Stellar Sleeper, says his experience has been "amazing!" Elizabeth Hamilton will conclude her 9 years of service as our Lab Manager this week, retiring with flair as our Secret Santa & Ugly Christmas Sweater event coincided with her celebration. We wish her all the CONGRATS & Happiest Trails for her new life chapter!

Meet Mike Yewell, Neurology Clinic Sleep Center's newest "Stellar Sleeper whose life has changed for the better using his CPAP nightly. Mike has been diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis, which often leads to muscle weakness, feeling fatigued, etc. He said he wasn't motivated to go out and do much & even feeling depressed. His pulmonologist had put him on oxygen. But this spring, Laura Porch, NP, sent him to have a sleep study which led to the additional diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for which he was prescribed CPAP therapy at the end of April. In only 4 months of nightly use, Mike spoke to our staff very enthusiastically about what a difference getting enough oxygen during the night has made on his mood, his energy level, his outlook on life, & even his weight loss goals! His pulmonologist discontinued his supplemental oxygen because his tissues were satisfactorily saturated due to the CPAP therapy at night, which led to a sense of freedom for Mike & his wife, Kay. Mike said he felt the difference after 1 week of using his CPAP. He said he never used to fall asleep very quickly - lying in bed awake a long time. But now, he falls asleep within 15 minutes! He sleeps deeply & feels better waking up every morning. Kay says Mike's CPAP machine doesn't bother her sleep at all!
We are so pleased for Mike's progress & his positive words & wanted to share his great story to help others who may have doubts, be struggling, or just like a happy story. :-) Go Mike! Yay, Stellar Sleepers!

Travis Geise from Zoll's "remede" recently educated the Sleep Team during a working lunch. Neurology Clinic Sleep Center is the only place in our area where patients can go for the actual cure for CSA, Central Sleep Apnea - remede - a surgically implanted phrenic nerve stimulating device that eradicates CSA.

(OSA - Obstructive Sleep Apnea - is treated with the "gold standard" CPAP therapy. Some patients have both CSA & OSA & require both interventions.)

The Greater Memphis Area Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioners Association held their July meeting at the Neurology Clinic where Kelly Vrettos, FNP delivered a wonderful presentation on sleep health - now a part of the American Heart Association's cardiac guidelines known as the Essential Eight. Sleep is problematic for nearly everyone during their lives for multitudes of reasons, & this discussion was eye-opening for all! 😄

Sleep is her specialty, and she speaks passionately in promotion of better sleep health. NP's only are to attend with RSVP.
