Welcome spring! If you are on the edge of deciding whether to go through with a total knee replacement I have some information for you!

Most people are unsure about going through a procedure like this because they don't want to take a pause in their daily life. But below is a rough outline of the recovery time/process.

1. The procedure itself takes 2 hours
2. When you wake up you will be transferred to a hospital room (within the hospital where the surgery was done) where you receive attentive care and much needed recovery time for up to 2 days.
3. You are free to go home! The hospital will give you a walker which you will need to ambulate with for 2 weeks.
4. After 1 week after your procedure, you come to see us for your first post operative appointment and we remove the bandage and check out the incision.
5. You return to us in 2 weeks to get your staples removed. Depending on your physical examination we will excuse you from the use of the walker.
6. You continue physical therapy and work on getting your knee stronger!

A total of 3 months is all you need to get back to normal.

The recovery time is based on your performance at physical therapy and your persistency of staying active. If you do your physical therapy at home and a facility as well as keeping active the recovery time can always be under 3 months.
