Alpaca fiber is famously warm, and it beats wool or cotton for a few key reasons:
🧬 1. Hollow Fiber Structure = Built-in Insulation
Alpaca hairs are partially hollow or have microscopic air pockets.
Those trapped air spaces work just like insulation in a house, holding warm air close to your body and keeping cold air out.
• Wool has some crimp and insulation, but less hollow structure than alpaca.
• Cotton fibers are solid and don’t trap heat well at all.
🌡️ 2. Warmer but Still Lightweight
Because alpaca traps so much air, it can be:
• Warmer than sheep’s wool
• Lighter for the same warmth
💨 4. Moisture-Wicking & Temperature Regulating
Alpaca is hydrophobic on the outside and hydrophilic inside, meaning it:
• Pulls moisture away from your skin
• Still feels warm even when damp
Cotton, by contrast, soaks up water and stays wet, which actually makes you colder.
🌬️ 5. Better Wind Resistance
Alpaca fibers naturally block wind better than wool or cotton because they’re smoother and less porous.
