And we thank our wonderful dispatchers at Morris County Communications Center for sharing some key points to remember when calling 9-1-1.
While no two 9-1-1 calls are ever the same, they all begin the same way: โ9-1-1, ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ข๐ตโ๐ด ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ค๐บ?โ
๐Knowing your exact location helps dispatchers send help where itโs needed without delay. ๐๐๐
If youโre unsure of your exact address, share any details you can: cross streets, building descriptions, business names, apartment or suite numbers, landmarks, or even mile markers. Every detail counts when seconds matter!
๐ฑNext, the dispatcher will ask for your phone number and for you to tell them exactly what happened.
Based on the information you provide, they may ask a series of questions. These questions do NOT delay response. Help is already being started while they gather details and relay them to police, fire, and EMS. Those details help responders arrive better prepared to assist you. ๐ฎโโ๏ธ๐๐
โ๏ธ Stay on the line and follow the call takerโs instructions. Theyโll let you know when itโs okay to hang up.
๐ If English is not your preferred language, let the call taker know right away. They can bring an interpreter on the line to assist.
We (and our Dispatcher friends) understand calling 9-1-1 can be stressful, and every second can feel like an hour. Weโre all here for you. Answering questions as clearly as possible helps us get you the help you need as quickly as possible.
