First nigellas blooming from fall planting. The seed of nigella sativa is an ancient food and medicine of the Middle East, Western China, Northern Africa and India. Some of its many names are Hei Zhong Cao Zi 黑种草子, black cumin, black caraway, love in the mist, fennel flower, and nutmeg flower. Fresh they have a sweet tropical fruit flavor that my children love. Dried they are pungent and bitter, medicinally they are sweet, pungent and warm. They enter the Spleen Lung and Heart meridians. In Chinese medicine they are used to move blood, tonify the kidneys and brain and drain dampness. In the Middle East they have been used for many things including lung health, allergies, digestion, cancer, milk flow and abortion. Ground and mixed with honey they are a great home remedy for colds and lung problems. Made famous recently for the use of nigella seed oil in treating Covid due to its antiviral and immunomodulatory actions. So much could be said about this prophetic herb that is mentioned in the Bible as the Muslim miracle herb and found in the Tomb of Tutankhamun.
