Dr. Ann Gallo would like the allocation system changed to allow kidneys from deceased donors under age 18 to be offered first to child recipients. “These kidneys will do really well in kids, but they’re not always being offered to children under the current system,” she said, adding that the current system does not accurately evaluate the quality of pediatric kidneys.

The system compares each organ donor to a hypothetical “ideal” 40-year-old donor. But kids are not small adults, and applying an adult standard causes pediatric kidneys to receive falsely poor scores, Gallo said. In particular, kidneys from donors aged 5-10, which have the potential to last the longest, are scored poorly and tend not to be offered to children who could benefit from them.

The story of a stranger who donated her kidney to save a two-year-old boy in need of a transplant after following his story on Facebook.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Pam Orlandi, BSN, RN, remembers her early days at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, when her daughter, Ali, then a young child, had a special spot beneath her desk. What began nearly 23 years ago in the burgeoning transplant program at Packard Children’s, has turned into a life-time career for Pam as a nurse, including nine years as administrative nursing supervisor and now as the physician experience program manager in the Office of Patient Experience.

Ali Orlandi, BSN, RN, a nurse in the acute care float pool and the incoming chair of the HEART Council, found her way back to Packard Children’s as an adult after initially pursuing a career in fashion design. Fashion allowed Ali to express her creativity, but there was something missing—the chance to interact with people in a meaningful way.

Today the mother-daughter duo prove caring for others is a family affair, crossing paths occasionally as they serve the needs of children and families.

Wishing all our moms the very best on this Mother’s Day!

Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo delivers a moving tribute to Christopher G. Dawes who recently retired from his position as CEO and president of Stanford Children’s Health following nearly 30 years of service and the 2017 expansion of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. Her words are recorded in the Congressional Record, the official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States Congress: http://bit.ly/2FvMBs7

“[Christopher] has led with distinction, purpose and integrity, and transformed Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital into the gold standard of care for children in our country...I ask the entire House of Representatives to join me in honoring this good and great man...”
