Does your home have a Home Sewage Treatment System (septic system)? Septic tanks are designed to allow wastewater to settle and separate into layers so that solids do not bypass the tank and clog the soil absorption component (eg. leach lines) downstream, which acts as a final “filter.” Unlike the synthetic filters we encounter in most of the rest of life, this “filter” cannot be cleaned; once the soil can no longer take water, often the only solution is replacement, which can be very expensive. That is why it is so important to pump the accumulated solids from your tank regularly (every 3-5 years). If you are unsure when your tank was last pumped or have other questions about your system design or maintenance, please call us at (440) 350-2543. A list of Lake county-registered pumpers can be found at https://www.lcghd.org/om-program/ .
