👀 When Should Your Child Get Their Eyes Checked?

📚 At minimum:
Every child should have a full eye exam before starting school. Many vision issues go unnoticed!

👓 Earlier is better if:
Vision problems run in the family
You notice squinting, eye rubbing, headaches
They hold things very close or struggle to see far away
They’re falling behind in reading or seem easily frustrated

Early detection makes a huge difference. If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time—this is your sign! 💙
Call Great Lakes Eyecare to schedule your child’s exam. 👁️✨

👀 What Causes Eye Floaters?
Those little squiggly shadows drifting through your vision can be annoying — but what are they?
Floaters happen when tiny clumps form inside the gel-like part of your eye (the vitreous). As light enters the eye, those clumps cast small shadows on the retina, causing you to “see” the floating shapes.
👉 Floaters are common and usually harmless, especially as we age.
⚠️ BUT — if you notice a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a dark curtain in your vision, it’s important to get your eyes checked right away.
Protect your sight. 💙

👁️✨ Did you know?
A fundus photo lets us take a clear picture of the back of your eye—showing the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels to catch problems early.
📸 And the best part?
We include fundus photos in every comprehensive exam at no extra cost. Just better care, no add-on fees.

👓 Myth or Fact?
Myth! You can’t become dependent on glasses.
Glasses don’t weaken your eyes — they simply help you see the world more clearly. Once you get used to crisp vision, going without them just feels extra blurry in comparison, not “dependent.”
Keep seeing your best. ✨👀

🔴 Red Eye? It Could Be Episcleritis 👁️

Episcleritis is a mild inflammation of the eye’s outer tissue. It often causes sectoral redness and mild irritation, but usually no vision changes or severe pain.

You can see the triangle of redness on this patients eye (posted with patient permission)

“Reading in dim light will ruin your eyes” is just that — a myth! ✨

While low light can make your eyes feel tired or strained, it does NOT cause permanent damage to your vision. Your eyes simply have to work a little harder to focus, which is why you might feel fatigue or mild discomfort.

So go ahead — enjoy that cozy book nook or bedside lamp. Just listen to your eyes and take breaks if they feel tired! 📚💡

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas and happy holidays! 🎄👓 Thank you for a wonderful year at Great Lakes Eyecare.
