🧡 Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

SMART Recovery Canada acknowledges the ongoing impacts of these institutions and the importance of listening, learning, and walking together toward healing. Recovery is about resilience, community, and hope. We are committed to creating spaces where every voice is heard and valued.

We invite our community to take time today to reflect, learn, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

🛠️ DENTS: A SMART Tool to Manage Urges

The DENTS tool helps to manage the unpredictable urges that can arise during recovery. It offers a clear, practical way to respond, putting you back in control. The goal isn’t to eliminate urges, but to handle them in a healthy, sustainable way.

D = Deny or Delay
Pause. Urges pass, one moment at a time.

E = Escape
Step away from triggers or stressful situations.

N = Neutralize
Acknowledge the urge. Let it rise and fade like a wave.

T = Tasks
Get busy. Call a friend, clean, count, or distract yourself.

S = Swap
Change your self-talk.
"This urge will kill me" becomes "This urge will pass."

🛠️ SMART Tool: Unconditional Self-Acceptance (USA) 🛠️

You are not your behaviours.
Your worth comes from being human, not from being perfect. 💛

Unconditional Self-Acceptance helps you separate your actions from your identity. Mistakes do not define you. They are part of being human.

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Britni Brady 🌟

Meet Britni, a passionate changemaker, proud mom, and dedicated member of the SMART Recovery Canada Board.

What inspired you to join the SMART Recovery Canada Board?
As someone in recovery, I know how hard it can be to find the right support. I didn’t discover SMART until after I had already started my journey. That inspired me to help make sure more people know about SMART’s empowering, evidence-based approach.

What value guides your work in the nonprofit space?
Authenticity. I believe real change starts with honest, meaningful connections - whether with donors, partners, or the community.

What are you most excited to work on as a board member?
I’m passionate about growing SMART Recovery across Canada, especially reaching underserved communities and raising awareness through digital and local engagement.

Outside of work, what lights you up?
I’m a proud mom of two, love hiking, gardening, and exploring the mountains with my family and dogs. I’m also passionate about mental health, reconciliation, and creating safe spaces for youth and families.

🌟 Board Spotlight: Meet Bill Boyce! 🌟

Bill is a dedicated member of the SMART Recovery Canada Board, bringing empathy, insight, and a deep commitment to supporting people on their recovery journeys.

💬 What motivates you to support the SMART Recovery mission?
“I am motivated by my empathy for people and wanting to help them on their recovery journey. I hate to see when society gives up on someone who just needs help. Too many times, I’ve seen addiction rooted in childhood trauma, adult trauma, and mental illness.”

💬 What advice would you give to someone exploring recovery for the first time?
“Sample different recovery methods and find what works best for you. Sometimes a combination of approaches is the right fit. All that matters is finding a path that works for you.”

💬 Describe SMART in one word:
Scientific.

💬 How do you recharge?
“I lean into my VACIs: gardening, playing guitar, building LEGO Technic, solving puzzles, quilting, cooking, tying fishing flies, getting out on the water, and spending time with my wife and our cat, Lila. She always knows when I need comfort.”

Thank you, Bill, for sharing your passion and for all that you do for SMART Recovery across Canada!
