🌟 Facilitator Spotlight: Robert’s Journey with SMART Recovery

Meet Robert, a SMART Recovery facilitator whose path to helping others began with his own experience of rebuilding and rediscovery.

Before finding SMART Recovery, Robert worked as a Family Physician and, like many in helping professions, he experienced burnout and personal challenges that affected both his career and marriage. In 2020, during treatment at Homewood Health in Guelph, Ontario, he was introduced to SMART Recovery and quickly connected with its CBT- and REBT-based tools for change. The program’s structure and focus on self-management became a cornerstone in his recovery and inspired him to give back as a facilitator.

Since becoming a facilitator, Robert has found deep purpose in guiding others through SMART’s 4-Point Program and helping participants apply its tools in their own lives.

“What I love most is watching people grow,” he says. “Abstinence is an important part of recovery, but the real transformation comes when people start to internalize these tools, challenge irrational beliefs, identify desired outcomes, and create real, lasting change.”

Robert says that being a facilitator has also strengthened his own recovery. “The best way to learn something is to teach it,” he explains. “Guiding others through SMART’s concepts pushes me to live them fully myself. That constant reflection has elevated my sobriety, my motivation, and my understanding.”

For Robert, one of the most inspiring parts of each meeting is the sense of community. “Watching participants support and encourage each other, sharing how a tool worked for them, and inspiring others to try it, is where you truly see SMART’s power in action.”

💙 Thank you, Robert, for all that you do to support others and help build a stronger recovery community

✨Facilitator Spotlight: Tiffany – Manitoba✨

Tiffany became a SMART Recovery facilitator to help others build meaningful, self-directed lives in recovery. She was drawn to SMART’s science-based approach and focus on practical tools that empower people rather than label them.

With her background in addiction and mental health, Tiffany has seen how life-changing it can be when people learn to take control of their choices and develop healthier coping skills. Facilitating SMART meetings gives her a chance to give back and share strategies that help others discover their own strength and potential.

“SMART is a non-judgmental, safe space for anyone affected by addiction,” Tiffany says. “Every meeting is a chance to gain new tools, share experiences, and grow in self-awareness. Everyone’s path looks different. Take what works for you and trust the process.”

💙 Thank you, Tiffany, for all that you do to support others and help build a stronger recovery community in Manitoba.

SMART Recovery Canada acknowledges the ongoing impacts of these institutions and the importance of listening, learning, and walking together toward healing. Recovery is about resilience, community, and hope. We are committed to creating spaces where every voice is heard and valued.

We invite our community to take time today to reflect, learn, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

🛠️ DENTS: A SMART Tool to Manage Urges

The DENTS tool helps to manage the unpredictable urges that can arise during recovery. It offers a clear, practical way to respond, putting you back in control. The goal isn’t to eliminate urges, but to handle them in a healthy, sustainable way.

D = Deny or Delay
Pause. Urges pass, one moment at a time.

E = Escape
Step away from triggers or stressful situations.

N = Neutralize
Acknowledge the urge. Let it rise and fade like a wave.

T = Tasks
Get busy. Call a friend, clean, count, or distract yourself.

S = Swap
Change your self-talk.
"This urge will kill me" becomes "This urge will pass."
