Sleep plays a vital role in how your brain and body recover each night. One of the most important stages is REM sleep, when dreaming occurs and your brain processes memories.

However, conditions like sleep apnea can interrupt this stage. When breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, the body briefly wakes to restart breathing. These interruptions can prevent you from reaching or staying in REM sleep, which may leave you feeling tired, unfocused, or mentally foggy the next day.

If you often wake up exhausted or suspect disrupted sleep, a sleep test can help identify the cause. Many people start with a home sleep apnea test, while others may complete an overnight sleep study in a sleep lab to better understand their sleep cycle.

Getting the right sleep diagnostic is the first step toward improving sleep quality and overall health.

Do you or your sleep partner hear groaning or moaning sounds during the night? It could be something called catathrenia, a rare sleep condition that causes long groaning noises during exhaling while asleep.

Many people never realize it’s happening until a partner points it out. Because the symptoms can look similar, catathrenia is sometimes mistaken for sleep apnea, which is why a proper sleep evaluation is important.

Common signs may include:
• Groaning or moaning during sleep
• Snoring
• Dry mouth in the morning
• Morning headaches or grogginess
• Trouble concentrating during the day

A sleep study can help identify breathing disruptions during the night and measure indicators like the Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI) or RDI sleep apnea index, which show how often breathing disturbances occur. In some cases, doctors also monitor blood oxygen level while sleeping to see if oxygen drops below normal oxygen levels during sleep.

Treatment options may include CPAP therapy, oral appliances, or other care depending on the cause. A home sleep apnea test (HST device) can also help evaluate symptoms from the comfort of home.

If unusual sleep sounds are affecting your nightsor your partner’s it may be time to take a closer look at your sleep health.

🍷 Alcohol and Sleep Apnea: What You Should Know

That nightcap may feel relaxing… but it can quietly interfere with your breathing and sleep quality.

Alcohol relaxes the muscles in your throat and slows your brain’s response to breathing disruptions. This can:

• Worsen snoring
• Prolong apnea events
• Lower oxygen levels
• Reduce melatonin
• Increase next-day fatigue and brain fog

Research suggests alcohol may raise the risk of sleep apnea by up to 25%. If you already have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), drinking before bed can increase your apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and make symptoms more severe.

Feeling constantly tired? Tools like the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (often searched as “epworth sleepiness scale mdcalc” or “epworth sleepiness scale scoring interpretation”) can help measure excessive daytime sleepiness. But a proper diagnosis requires a sleep study.

For many adults, an at-home option like an HST sleep study (home sleep test) — including devices such as the Ectosense NightOwl — offers a convenient alternative to an overnight lab.

If you’re a commercial driver, it’s especially important to pay attention to symptoms. DOT sleep apnea screenings, DOT-approved sleep apnea tests, and DOT sleep study requirements are part of maintaining safety and passing a sleep apnea DOT physical.

Sleep apnea can also affect younger patients. In some cases, providers may recommend a sleep study for kids, children, toddlers, or even infants if symptoms like snoring or breathing pauses are present.

If alcohol is part of your lifestyle and you’re experiencing:
✔ Loud snoring
✔ Morning headaches
✔ Waking up gasping
✔ Excessive daytime sleepiness

It may be time to get tested.

A convenient at-home sleep apnea test from Sleep Care Online can help you move from symptoms to answers — without spending the night in a lab.

Sleep isn’t just “rest” — it’s a 4-stage recovery process 💤

Every 80–100 minutes, your body cycles through NREM and REM sleep to support brain function, immunity, metabolism, and emotional health.

When disrupted by Sleep apnea, you may wake up feeling exhausted — even after 7–8 hours in bed.

If you’ve been asking:
• What is PSG in medical terms?
• What to expect at a sleep study?
• How long do sleep studies last?

A traditional in-lab polysomnography (PSG) includes overnight monitoring with sleep study wiring. But today, home options like the Night Owl Monitor offer a simpler way to test from the comfort of your own bed.

Understanding your sleep stages is the first step. Testing is the next.

Snoring. Gasping. Always Tired? 😴

These may be signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) — a sleep disorder affecting millions.

If you’re asking:
• What is a sleep study?
• How are sleep studies done?
• What happens during a sleep study?

A sleep study test — also known as a PSG sleep study (polysomnography) — tracks your breathing, oxygen, heart rate, and brain activity while you sleep. It can be performed in a sleep lab or through at-home testing, depending on your needs.

Sleep study results can reveal pauses in breathing that happen 5–30 times per hour in some adults.

Recognizing the symptoms is the first step toward better sleep and better health.

Do you wake up exhausted—even after what should have been a full night’s rest? Loud snoring, morning headaches, daytime fatigue, or waking up breathless could point to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Many people delay testing because they’re unsure how long a sleep study takes, what happens during an overnight sleep study, or what if they can’t sleep during a sleep study in a lab setting.

The good news? With Sleep Care Online, you can complete a home sleep apnea test—without spending the night in a sleep lab test facility.

Here’s what the process looks like:
✔️ 10-minute telehealth consultation
✔️ Disposable multi-night sleep test mailed to your home
✔️ Results reviewed the next morning
✔️ Prescription for PAP therapy if needed
✔️ Ongoing support from sleep experts

Unlike a traditional polysomnographic sleep study, this home-based sleep diagnostic monitors breathing patterns, heart rate, and oxygen levels—often sufficient to diagnose OSA.

If you’ve been wondering how long a sleep study lasts or how long it takes to get sleep study results, this option makes the process simple and fast. https://shorturl.at/JN99Q

Struggling with loud snoring, gasping for air at night, or constant daytime fatigue? It could be Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) a condition that causes repeated pauses in breathing while you sleep.

Left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and more. The good news? There are effective treatment options available.

The gold standard for OSA treatment is CPAP therapy, which gently delivers continuous air pressure to keep your airway open throughout the night. When used consistently, CPAP can:

✔ Keep airways open
✔ Reduce or eliminate snoring
✔ Improve sleep quality
✔ Decrease daytime fatigue
✔ Support heart health

Starting CPAP is a lifestyle adjustment, but with the right guidance and support, it can make a significant difference in your health and quality of life.

Did you know you can stop breathing in your sleep without making a single sound? 😳💭

Most of us associate sleep apnea with loud snoring, gasping, and physical struggle (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). But there’s a lesser-known, silent type: Central Sleep Apnea (CSA).

Instead of a blocked airway, CSA is a critical communication error. Your brain simply hits "pause" and fails to send the signal to your chest muscles to breathe. No struggle, no snoring—just silence. 🧠⚡🫁

Swipe 👉 to learn the science behind this "signal lapse," what causes the brain's feedback loop to break, and the advanced treatments available to fix it!

If you or a loved one have a complex sleep history or feel exhausted despite sleeping, don't wait for symptoms to worsen. Specialized diagnostic sensors are required to detect CSA accurately.

Sleep apnea is more common than many people realize and understanding the type you may have is key to getting the right care.

There are three main types of sleep apnea:

• Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – caused by physical airway blockage during sleep
• Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) – caused by miscommunication from the brain
• Complex Sleep Apnea – a combination of both

Symptoms can include loud snoring, morning headaches, daytime fatigue, poor concentration, and waking up gasping for air. Many people live with these signs for years without recognizing the cause.

The good news? Sleep apnea is diagnosable and manageable with proper treatment.

REM sleep isn’t just “dream time.” It’s when your brain is highly active, helping with memory, learning, and emotional balance. Without enough quality sleep, you may feel foggy, irritable, and mentally drained.

Adults generally need around 7–8 hours of sleep, but quality matters just as much as quantity. Frequent wake-ups, feeling tired in the morning, or loud snoring could be signs your sleep isn’t as restful as it should be.
