A recent study by McGill University found that one plastic tea bag can release approximately 11.6 billion microplastic and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles into a cup of tea when steeped in boiling water.
The microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic, ranging from 100 nanometers to 5 millimeters in size and the nanoplastics are event small, measuring less than 100 nanometers.
The amount of plastic release by tea bags is several orders of magnitude higher than previously reported in other foods and drinks.
Microplastics are a HUGE concern and are still being studied to understand their full impact on the human body. What they know so far is microplastics have been linked to an increase risk of cardiovascular disease, endocrine disruptions (hormone imbalances, infertility, etc.), gut damage, neurological disorders, chronic inflammation, cellular damage, and even cancer.
If you love drinking tea, consider buying loose leaf herbs and a tea strainer ball - they’re inexpensive and and super easy way to make a quick cup of tea!
