Tip Tuesday: Body Awareness!

From our OT's: Heavy work improves body awareness!
Some heavy work activities to do at home: carrying groceries, doing chores (laundry vacuuming, making bed), jumping on the trampoline, moving weighted items or weighted blanket.

From our Speech therapists: labeling their body parts as they're using them! For example, your finger and hands are so strong carrying your toy basket. Look how strong your legs are when you jump!

Providing activities with language increases the child's understanding and awareness of their body and how it works!

Last Friday, Kenley Smith, OT and Clinic Director at Beyond Brandon, trained Camp Kamassa’s staff on sensory processing and ways to utilize their new sensory room.

Building your toddler's speech and language skills doesn't require fancy toys—just everyday moments filled with talk, play, and connection!

Here are a few simple ways to help your child grow their communication skills:

🗣 Talk through your day – Describe what you're doing and name everyday objects. Pause and let your child respond—even if they're not using words yet.
📖 Read daily – Use books with rhyme and repetition, and let your child predict what happens next or help "tell" the story.
🧸 Play creatively – Use common objects like boxes and pans to spark the imagination. Talk about what you're pretending together!
🌳 Get outside – Talk about what you see, hear, and feel. Compare objects using words like big/little, loud/quiet, soft/hard.
📵 Limit screen time – Choose high-quality shows/apps and co-watch when possible. Most importantly, model good screen habits by giving your child your full attention.

Tiny moments of connection = big leaps in development.

Sensory integration is how the brain organizes and responds to information from our senses—vision, hearing, touch (tactile), smell, taste, and the lesser-known senses: Vestibular (balance and head position) and Proprioception (body awareness from muscles and joints).

Sometimes, a child's brain has trouble processing this input—this is called Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). You might notice signs like:

🔹 Picky eating
🔹 Sensitivity to noise or light
🔹 Difficulty with balance or coordination
🔹 Preference for certain fabrics or clothing
🔹 Frequent meltdowns with no clear cause
