I started my medical journey when in my youth I discovered a desire for learning and a passion for helping others. After completing a degree in genetics and premed at UC Davis and while preparing to attend conventional medical school, something didn't feel right about that path. Even as a young adult, I knew that in order to truly uncover the root causes of health complaints, I needed to spend time diving deeply into a case. In addition, I wanted a broad tool kit with which I could work. I felt that conventional medical training would fall short in these areas, so I pivoted and decided to get my doctorate in Chinese medicine instead. My career as a doctor of Chinese medicine has taught me the power of devoting time and research into the root cause of disease. Like a detective, I learned to put clues together to figure out what was driving patients' health complaints. Rather than chasing symptoms, I discovered the fulfillment of uncovering true causes of disease. After the birth of my child seven years ago, I found myself plagued with my own health issues. I struggled to figure out my own insomnia, fatigue, pain, and inflammation. It was then that I discovered the missing piece for not only my own health but for my ability to help others. By utilizing functional labs and delving into my studies of Functional Medicine, I gained a whole new diagnostic toolkit that is functional laboratory analysis. Now, when a patient's lab results come in, it's as if I'm a health detective and someone drops 10 pages of clues on my lap. Functional Medicine has opened up a world of possibility for me clinically, where the guesswork is taken out, the data guides the path to health, and I can create precise, individualized treatment programs that get results. I built my foundation on Chinese medicine, which taught me the art of root-cause clinical diagnosis from a systems approach. My functional medicine training has taken that skill to the next level, allowing me to hone in on exactly where hidden sources of dysfunction are occurring based on biochemical individuality. When I'm not working to uncover the drivers of patient health complaints, you'll find me spending time with my husband and daughter, climbing, dancing Cuban salsa, and practicing yoga.

Time for some satisfying and healthy comfort food made super simple at home! The fries are very easy, just wash the potatoes and slice into your preferred shape, toss in paprika, salt, and olive oil, then bake at 375 degrees for 20-30 minutes along with the garlic cloves, flipping halfway through. Sweet potatoes are great for gut health, full of nutrients like vitamin B6, vitamin D, potassium, and magnesium, and aren't inflammatory like white potatoes can be. Also, baked fries are a great substitute for deep fried food, and hit the spot when you're craving crunchy french fries.

The garlic yogurt sauce is easy to whip up along with the fries and is very versatile. After baking the garlic cloves and they're soft, just peel them and mash them in the yogurt along with cumin, onion powder, salt, and lemon. This sauce can be used as a veggie dip or as a creamy sauce on roasted vegetables or a burrito bowl. Yogurt is excellent for gut health, due to how it "seeds" the microbiome with beneficial bacteria. Other great benefits are that cumin scavenges free radicals in our bodies along with garlic being antimicrobial, which means that it kills bad bugs while keeping the microbiome intact. Lastly, lemon juice aids in digestion and can help prevent kidney stones.

4 oz yogurt
3-4 large roasted garlic cloves
1/4 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp onion powder
Salt to taste: I use 1/8 tsp

Need to lower grains or carbs? Wondering how to bring more veggies into your meals? Look no further! This recipe is a nutrient-rich version of traditional fried rice, substituting cauliflower for rice, and incorporating plenty of colorful veggies. You can eat it as a warm bowl of rice, or wrap it in iceberg lettuce cups with avocado and chili sauce!

Recipe:
1/2 a head of cauliflower
1/2 onion
3 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon of ghee
1 teaspoon of turmeric
1/4 cup h**p seeds
1/2 cup walnuts
Plenty of colorful veggies!
Add green onion, sesame seeds, and avocado for garnish

Sprouting might seem complicated and confusing, so let’s break it down simply! Sprouting releases phytochemicals in seeds and beans and makes them more bioavailable for your body to use. Along with being crunchy, tasty, and diverse, they’re easy to make!

Just use any size jar covered with cheesecloth and a rubber band, or get a sprouting lid and canning jar for easy draining. Soak seeds or beans in water for a day, drain, keep on a slant for draining, while rinsing daily for 3-7 days. That’s all there is to it!

Here's a specific way that sprouts can help correct underlying biochemical imbalances. With the assistance of the DUTCH test, we find that some of our patients metabolize estrogen down the 4-OH-E1 pathway (enzyme CYP1B1) too strongly, which is a risk factor for breast cancer. Thankfully, sulforaphane strongly inhibits the CYP1B1 enzyme, bringing down the 4-OH-E1 metabolite that is associated with breast cancer.

At Quin Functional Medicine, we get the best results when we include HPA axis testing and treatment. When the HPA axis is suboptimal, it can easily beat up on other body systems such as the digestive system, the immune system, the reproductive system, detoxification pathways, and the thyroid. In addition to all that, a dysfunctional HPA axis can promote inflammation, catabolism (the breakdown of tissue including bones, muscle, and hair), blood sugar dysregulation, weight gain, cognitive decline, and sympathetic dominance (when you're stuck in the fight or flight response). Did you know that sometimes the root of a thyroid problem is adrenal dysfunction? For example, high cortisol inhibits the conversion of inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to active thyroid hormone (T3). Thyroid issues are often a secondary problem to adrenal dysfunction and cortisol imbalance. Wherever there is a thyroid problem, we always want to test and correct the HPA axis (the signaling system between the brain and the adrenals). Utilizing thyroid medication alone when the thyroid problem is secondary to an adrenal problem can cause patients to spin their wheels because the root of the problem isn't getting addressed.

Besides getting your thyroid function checked, we always recommend checking adrenal function as well. In addition, bringing in tools to mitigate stress helps both systems!

Our modern life throws stressors our way from multiple directions at once, making adrenal dysfunction all too common. It's a no-brainer that adrenal dysfunction can present as exhaustion and burnout. But did you know that it can make you store excess fat, especially in the belly? Here's how:
📍Cortisol is secreted by the adrenals in response to stress and/or low blood sugar. In an acute situation, cortisol functions to suppress inflammation and make blood sugar levels rise so your body can battle the stress. High cortisol can be useful in an emergency, but when chronically high, causes gluconeogenesis, which means your body breaks down protein to create glucose. The high glucose and subsequent high blood sugar, when chronically elevated, leads to the storage of fat in the abdomen.
📍Cortisol elevates blood glucose, which in turn raises insulin levels, leading to a drop in blood sugar. This fluctuation can make an individual feel an increase in appetite and overeat.
📍Cortisol has effects on adipose tissue directly, influencing fat distribution in the body. There are more cortisol receptors in the adipose tissue of the midsection, which means that chronically high cortisol levels encourage the distribution of fat to the belly.
If you're experiencing chronic stress, it is critical to intervene with lifestyle modifications as well as appropriate lab work and supplementation to help the body function normally again. Cortisol and DHEA have many opposing roles. Cortisol is catabolic (tissue breakdown) and DHEA is anabolic (tissue-building). When we have to manage stress over a long period of time, our DHEA can drop out and become quite deficient. DHEA levels change very slowly, but cortisol levels can change quickly. In moments of highs stress, the adrenals put out more cortisol to handle the stress. This creates an imbalance in the ratio of cortisol to DHEA. More cortisol and less DHEA puts us in a catabolic state since there's not enough DHEA to balance out the catabolism.

Cortisol is an immunosuppressant and DHEA is an immune booster. This is one way that adrenal dysfunction can weaken the immune system.

In short spurts, cortisol can boost immune function by lowering inflammation. But in our modern stressful world, we often end up with sustained high cortisol. When cortisol stays chronically high, the body can get stuck in an inflammatory response, which weakens the immune system.

Additionally, stress decreases the number of lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that help fight infection. When lymphocytes are low, you're more susceptible to viruses, including colds and flu.

DHEA is a stress hormone whose decline with aging is believed to contribute to some age-associated conditions, including impairment of immune function and thus increased susceptibility to infection. A few ways that DHEA supports immune function are by enhancing lymphocyte proliferation, improving T cell function, and raising natural killer cell cytotoxicity, which means your immune system can fight better.

According to scientific research, high cortisol can be a cause of brain fog and poor memory. Check out this study from the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience (link below) --

"Results: Clinical studies found that elevated cortisol was associated with poorer overall cognitive functioning, as well as with poorer episodic memory, executive functioning, language, spatial memory, processing speed, and social cognition; while in animals, glucocorticoid administration resulted in cognitive impairment and abnormal behavior. In cognitively healthy subjects, higher cortisol levels have been associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and AD [Alzheimer's Disease]. Subjects with dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) due to AD have been found to have higher CSF cortisol levels than cognitively healthy controls. Elevated CSF cortisol may also be associated with a more rapid cognitive decline in MCI due to AD. Elevated cortisol levels have been also found in delirium. High cortisol may mediate the impact of stressful life events, high neuroticism, depression, sleep disturbances, as well as cardiovascular risk factors on cognitive performance, neurodegeneration, and cognitive decline. High cortisol may also exert neurotoxic effects on the hippocampus, and promote oxidative stress and amyloid β peptide toxicity. Further possible underlying mechanisms include the interactions of cortisol with inflammatory mediators, neurotransmitters, and growth factors.
