I am excited about some upcoming changes to my counseling practice.

I have been in private practice for 14 years and I have been a counselor for 23 years. In that time, I have seen that couples most often come to marriage counseling after they are in crisis---and I mean "on the way to the divorce attorney" kind of crisis.

My office would be the last stop on the way.

It is very frustrating as a counselor because in most cases, one person has already made up their mind to divorce and they are just coming to counseling so they can say they did it. That really ties my hands and leaves me helpless as a helper.

I have decided I'm no longer going to spend my time on the couples that I need to convince to stay married (it doesn't work anyway). I'm going to focus on couples that are still committed to their marriage even though they know it needs some work.

Marriage is a commitment and it requires the willingness to grow and change with your spouse over the course of your marriage. Every couple has issues. But if addressed early enough, those issues can be helped!

In my experience, most couples ignore their issues and allow them to go on for 5-10 years before they are in crisis. My encouragement is to not wait those 5 or 10 years. Do something now.

I have become certified in Prepare Enrich Marriage Assessment, which is a tool that allows you to receive a customized report about the health of your marriage. It helps you know what your strengths as a couple are, as well as the areas that need growth.

Conflict cannot truly be avoided. If you avoid conflict with others, you will cause conflict within. The answer is to learn how to successfully navigate conflict with others by using effective communication! Listening to the other person’s perspective and seeking to understand them goes a long way in resolving differences.

We had a nice visit with Jean Merrell today! She offered invaluable words of wisdom to me and Keever as Keever begins her career offering testing services in the private practice world. Keever has worked previously as a school psychologist in the school system. We do appreciate Jean’s help with giving some advice as she makes this transition.

We are so excited to announce that we will have some new providers seeing clients in our office beginning this week! Although a separate business from us, they will offer services that are complimentary to what we do at Refuge!

Desoto Family Wellness Center will be offering counseling and testing services to all ages. Their clinicians are Keever Hoffman and Lauren Stephens. Some of the services offered includes psychological evaluations, testing for ADHD/learning disorders/other school issues, and counseling for anxiety/depression/grief, etc from a trauma informed approach.
