💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Mental health matters just as much as physical health. This month is a reminder that healing, growth, and support are not signs of weakness, they are part of being human.

Whether you are navigating stress, anxiety, grief, relationship struggles, burnout, trauma, or simply trying to balance life’s demands, you do not have to do it alone.

At Family Counseling Services, we believe in creating a safe and supportive space where individuals, couples, children, and families can feel heard, understood, and empowered.

A few reminders this month:
✨ Rest is productive
✨ Asking for help is courageous
✨ Progress does not have to be perfect
✨ Your story matters
✨ Mental health support is for everyone

Let’s continue working together to reduce stigma, increase compassion, and remind others that support is available.

Meet Ryan Johnson - Now Accepting Clients in Boise!
$15 per session

Family Counseling Services is excited to introduce Ryan Johnson, a graduate-level counseling intern who will be joining our Boise office starting in June!

Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cal State Fullerton and is currently pursuing his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling here in Idaho. He is passionate about helping others and plans to specialize in Marriage and Couples Counseling, with additional interest in Family Counseling.

Ryan’s approach is warm, supportive, and evidence based. He incorporates:
✔️ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
✔️ Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
✔️ Motivational Interviewing

He creates a safe, compassionate space where clients can feel heard and supported as they work through life’s challenges.

Outside of the counseling room, Ryan enjoys spending time with family, exploring nature, and finding the best sushi spots Idaho has to offer.

💡 Starting in June, Ryan will be offering sessions for just $15 at our Boise office.

🚨 Community Alert: Text Message Scam Going Around 🚨

We’ve been made aware of a scam circulating in our area involving text messages claiming to be from the Idaho District Court about an “unpaid traffic violation.”

These messages often:

Include a case number, judge name, and officer details
Threaten immediate consequences (warrants, license suspension, etc.)
Urge you to “resolve immediately” through a link

⚠️ Please know: Courts do NOT send summons or legal notices via text message.

If you receive a message like this:
❌ Do NOT click the link
❌ Do NOT respond or provide any information
🗑️ Delete the message

If you’re unsure, you can always verify directly through official court websites or by calling your local courthouse.

Stay safe and feel free to share this to help others avoid being scammed!

Get to know yourself a little better

Today’s invite is simple:
Take a few minutes to explore something most of us don’t even realize we have: our blind spots.

Researchers at Project Implicit created a quick activity called the Implicit Association Test (IAT). It’s designed to gently uncover the automatic associations your brain has learned over time, without you consciously choosing them.

👉 This isn’t about what you believe
👉 It’s about what your brain has been conditioned to associate

✨ Your Activity

Set aside 10–15 minutes and try it here:

Go in with curiosity, not judgment.

Love or hate small talk?

📢 Important Update for Families with Minor Clients

At Family Counseling Services, we want to keep our community informed about changes that may impact your care.

Due to a new Idaho law, Idaho House Bill 822 (effective July 1, 2026), there are updated requirements around confidentiality and parent communication when working with minors.

What this means in simple terms:
• In certain situations, therapists are required to notify parents/guardians within 72 hours
• This includes disclosures related to gender identity or requests for social transition (such as name/pronoun changes or use of gender-specific spaces)
• In these cases, confidentiality cannot be maintained, even if a minor requests it

Additionally:
• Parent/guardian consent is required before providers can support certain transition-related requests in treatment

Our approach at FCS:
We remain committed to:
✔ Being transparent about confidentiality from the start
✔ Supporting minors in navigating conversations with parents
✔ Providing respectful, professional, and nonjudgmental care
✔ Walking alongside both clients and families through sensitive topics

We understand this is a complex and personal area. Our goal is to balance legal requirements with compassionate care for every family we serve.

If you have questions about how this may impact services, please reach out to your provider or contact our office.
