How does the average person hear?

The ear is made up of 3 parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. Here’s how it works:

First, the outer ear collects sound waves, funneling them into your ear canal. The sound waves hit your eardrum, sending the 3 bones in your middle ear into vibration. The vibrations of the middle ear bones create ripples in the fluid housed in your inner ear. These ripples cause hair cells in the inner ear to move, sending a signal to the 8th cranial nerve (your hearing nerve), telling your brain that there is sound.

For the next few Fun Fact Fridays, we will be diving deeper into each portion of the ear and how it works. Check back next Friday for another fun fact! Happy weekend from everyone here at Idaho Ear Clinic! 👂🏼
