Selves-care is a relationship skill defined as mutual support techniques that can relax each other via quality time and positive touch. It is a term coined by Dr. Mark Moss, a UK doctor who wanted to explore couples using reciprocal massage therapy in a touched-deprived Covid era to improve relationship wellness. Quick summary: IT WORKS.

The participants of research experienced benefits including:

• Physical wellbeing: chronic tension relief, beneficial for headaches, neck tension, shoulder aches, and night sleep.

• Mental wellbeing: helps not to worry, increase clarity, release emotional stress, lift the mood, provide calmness, comfort, relaxation, and pleasure.

• Relational wellbeing: deeper connection emotionally and spiritually, feeling in touch with each other’s mood, and better communication.

This research is my inspiration for the Couples Retreat Workshop I have developed. My mission is to offer couples learning opportunities to gain new skills that promote their relationship wellbeing.

Midweek Retreat: Go outdoors!

It’s been gorgeous in Kansas City lately with the leaves changing colors 😍 and mild temperatures.

Here are 4 benefits of being outdoors:

🍁 REDUCES STRESS

A Japanese study that focused on the effects of Shinrin-yoku (taking in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing) found that just a short period outdoors can reduce cortisol levels, the natural chemical found in your body that causes stress. Being outside relieves muscle tension and helps reduce stress.

🍁 BOOSTS MOOD

There are elements of the outdoors that you cannot find nor replicate inside. Direct sunlight and fresh air are two things you cannot find while indoors, and both offer numerous benefits for your mind and body. Natural sunlight exposure can improve your mood and overall self-esteem.

🍁 FIGHTS DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

Spending time outdoors reduces your symptoms of anxiety and depression. An analysis of ten studies found that spending time in a green environment improved mood and self-esteem. Those struggling with mental illness saw significant increases in their self-esteem and saw a reduction in their depression symptoms.

🍁 PUTS YOUR MIND AT EASE

Spending time in nature also helps your mind rest. The world is full of stressors, whether they be from work, personal relationships, or financial issues. Sometimes, you need to escape from these stressors to rest your mind. Being outdoors allows your mind to decompress and normalize. The daily stress of life can weigh on you and lead to mental fatigue. Studies have found that restorative environments, like nature, have been useful in getting your mind back on track and energized.

Why do we crave therapeutic touch?

We all know that after a massage we feel better… but why?🤔

Research shows the right kind of touch can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, stimulate the hippocampus (an area of the brain that is central to memory), and drive the release of a host of hormones and neuropeptides that have been linked to positive and uplifting emotions.
