Measles outbreaks in other regions of the United States have received a lot of media attention. We wanted to provide general information on measles for our families.

What is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through coughing, sneezing, or touching infected surfaces.

Symptoms – typically appear 7-14 days after exposure & may include:
• High fever (may reach 104°F or higher)
• Cough and runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• White spots in the mouth
• Red rash that starts on the face and spreads

How Measles Spreads:
• Through direct contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person
• By touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face
• The virus can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person has left the area

Complications:
Measles can cause serious health problems, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and hearing loss.

Prevention:
• The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is the best protection.
• Two doses provide 97% protection and are given at 12-15 months and 4-6 years.

What to Do If You Think You Have Measles:
• Call your doctor before visiting.
• Stay home to avoid spreading it.
• Rest, drink fluids, and take fever medicine (avoid aspirin in children).

When to Seek Emergency Care:
• Trouble breathing
• Severe dehydration
• Seizures or confusion

Who is Most at Risk?
• Babies too young for vaccination
• Pregnant women
• People with weak immune systems

Conclusion:
Measles is a serious but preventable disease. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your community. If you suspect measles, take precautions and seek medical advice.

From the Johnson County Health Department

https://www.jocogov.org/newsroom/jcdhe-monitors-tb-situation

You may have seen news reports about tuberculosis in Kansas. What’s your risk of becoming infected? The risk to the general public is low at this time. All identified TB cases in Johnson County, Kansas (7 active cases and 2 latent cases) associated with the outbreak in the Kansas City metro area have completed treatment. Shortly after beginning treatment, a person with active TB disease is no longer infectious. A person with latent TB (inactive infection) cannot spread TB germs to others but takes treatment to prevent the development of active TB disease.

Who is most at risk for TB? Anyone can get TB, but you’re most at risk if you’ve had repeated and prolonged exposure to a person with active TB disease (i.e., you live with or work alongside someone with active TB). Tuberculosis is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB germs are put into the air when a person with active TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, speaks or sings. People who breathe in the air may become infected with TB.

Tuberculosis is not spread by touch and you cannot get TB by walking past an infectious person. There is no vaccine available in the United States to prevent TB.
