I was at a networking meeting a few weeks ago and the moderator – who is both a friend and a former patient, said something that I have been reveling in ever since. “Jen’s not for everybody.” She was worried I would take it in a way she did not mean it, but I took it exactly how she meant it and it is one of the best professional compliments I’ve ever received.

I am not for everyone.

I feel strongly for every person who walks in my door and I advocate for them and encourage them to advocate for themselves. I ask questions other practitioners may be afraid to ask. I share my (very) strong opinions and I offer zero bu****it. If I am not sure acupuncture can help your problem, I will tell you. If I think the medical doctor you’re seeing is neglecting important options that can be useful, I’m going to tell you. You’re coming to me for my expertise and my honesty and I am not going to tell you something or just nod my head or make up stories that you need to be seen three times a week otherwise you will not get better. You are the judge of if/when you feel better. You see the difference between visits. I am just the facilitator.

I am the practitioner you can talk to about anything, without judgment. I’m the one who will reply on a Sunday night at 10 pm if it’s important. If I help you make your baby, I will be requesting to follow you on social media so I can watch that baby grow up and cheer for every milestone.

One of my favorite teachers said that acupuncturists fall into a strange category – we are somewhere between hairdressers and surgeons.

Finding the right acupuncturist or any doctor is like dating. You need the right chemistry. You need a good rapport. You need trust and you need to feel safe in their care.

You need to be able to completely fall apart on my table and know I’ll help you pick up the pieces before you leave.

That certainly is not for everyone. I get that. And I would not be able to authentically practice any other way.
