Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral and Cremation

Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral and Cremation In 1888, A.H. Schram began the business. The first business locations were at the present “Book World” and “Miller Home Furnishings” buildings in Merrill. Mr.

At Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral and Cremation, we believe it is our first priority to provide the best professional service.

3rd Street Location: 903 E 3rd St, Merrill, WI 54452
Eagle Drive Location: 301 South Eagle Drive Merrill, WI 54452 In those early years visitations or “wakes” were held in the home of the deceased. Emblaming was often done at the home. The Schrams also owned and operated two f

urniture stores. This was very common in those days. As time progressed funeral services became more and more specialized. Schram’s sons, Alfred, Clarence and Gustav, eventually joined the business and in 1939 they purchased and converted the Rectory of the Episcopalian Church, 212 Pier St., into a Funeral Home. Eventually the furniture and funeral home businesses became separate entities. In the 1950’s, a son-in-law of one of the Schram boys, Joe Johanson, took over the business and operated it until the late 1960’s. In 1976, Alan, Dean and Paul Waid purchased the funeral home which was known as the Schram-Waid Funeral Home. Due to space, parking and handicap accessibility issues, the Waids decided to build a new facility. In April of 1994 they moved into the new funeral home at 301 Eagle Dr. and changed the name to Waid Funeral Home. The Waid Family has been serving the Merrill Area Community now for over 3 decades. On July 1, 2008 the Waid’s sold part of their interest in the business to the Vertin Family of Minnesota. Alan retired in March of 2009 and Paul continues to serve families in the Merrill Area as a funeral director, manager and part owner. We are very proud of our legacy in funeral service. We are now celebrating 124 years of compassionate and caring service to Merrill Area Families and rest assured we will be here for many more years to come. Paul Waid – Owner/Director

Zakary Ryan Plautz

Zakary “Zak” Ryan Plautz, age 32, of Merrill, WI, passed away at his home on April 30, 2026.

Zak was born on August 16, 1993 in Sheboygan, WI to Wendy Plautz and Ryan Posewitz. Throughout his school years, Zak excelled in academics and the arts. From his theatrical performances in costume at home as a child to wowing audiences in his middle school performances as the Lion in The Wizard of Oz and Aladdin in Aladdin and the King of Thieves, he loved the stage.

In high school, Zak showcased his persuasive skills as a member of the debate team, always eager to argue his case. Although a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis his junior year threatened to disrupt his plans, it was no match for his grit and determination. On July 8, 2010, he rang the cancer-free bell at Children’s Hospital.

After a once-in-a-lifetime Make-a-Wish trip to Africa with his parents, Zak continued to thrive in school, graduating from Sheboygan South High School in 2011 as a valedictorian and Senior Class President.

Zak’s kindness, compassion and empathy were the cornerstones of who he was. He made an important difference in many lives through organizations such as the Nourish Program, Church School Work, and Rotary Interact, just to name a few. His giving heart was on display through his passion for helping others; his true colors shined through when he took the lead in organizing a bone marrow registry drive for one of his high school teachers who was diagnosed with cancer. Zak was a true advocate for the underdog and made many special friends over the years who shared his passion for making the world a better place for everyone.

A life-long learner at heart, Zak continued his educational journey out east, graduating from Columbia University in New York City in 2016. From there he delved into post baccalaureate work at Fordham University in New York and was especially proud of the Alzheimer’s research he worked on in New York where he, along with numerous colleagues, received recognition in a publication for their contributions. He was also honored to be accepted into the MD/PhD Program at Medical College of Wisconsin.

When he wasn’t immersed in lab work, Zak spent time working for a nonprofit in New York where he helped schedule arts and sciences interdisciplinary roundtables. As busy as he was with so many important endeavors, Zak always made time for friends. He loved venturing around New York City sampling delicious cuisine and experiencing the array of various cultures. The mention of “Astoria Fish Market, and Broadway” brought an instant twinkle to his bright blue eyes.

Zak worked for several companies in recent years, making many friends along the way. He had a passion for creating his own jewelry and artworks, even considering a side business selling some of his creations. Whether with family or friends, he always spread positivity and love. He believed that love is unconditional, kind, and everlasting, and his gentle, caring heart will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Zakary is survived by his mother, Wendy Plautz of Merrill; his father Ryan (Wendy) Posewitz and half-brothers of Nashville, TN; grandmothers, Carol Plautz of Merrill and Gladys Posewitz of Sheboygan, WI; aunts, Sue (Dave) Pyan of Merrill, Laura Borzykowski of Sheboygan, WI, Lisa (Phil) Entringer of Rio, WI, Lesslie (Mike) Bartzen of Sheboygan, WI; uncles, David “Beaver” (Heather) Plautz, of Merrill, Tim (Jenn) Posewitz of Nashville, TN, and Shawn (Michelle) Posewitz of Florida; numerous cousins, countless friends, and his loving furry companion, Atom.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jerry Plautz, Don Posewitz and Gail Posewitz; and uncle, Bob Borzykowski.

Zak will be remembered for his unique way with words, his friendship, his compassion, and his genuine smile that will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved. He believed in the importance of listening and trying to understand each other better, reaching out to others who have been silent for a while, lending a hand to those in need and most of all laughing and loving a lot.

In memory of Zak, please consider a contribution to the Blood Cancer United, Mental Health America, Make-a-Wish or your local Humane Society.

Linda M. Schmidt

The Reverend Linda Schmidt

Linda Marie (Johnson) Schmidt was called home to be with her heavenly father on April 27, 2026 at home and surrounded by her family.

Linda was born on September 14, 1945 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the third of four girls to her parents Eleanor (Martens) and Oscar Johnson. Linda’s mother was a beautician and regularly sat the girls down so she could practice the new and upcoming hair cuts (much to their dismay). She attended Humboldt Park Elementary School and then Bay View High School in Milwaukee. She began her college career at UW-Whitewater, but transferred to UW-Stevens Point in 1966 when she followed her family in their move “up north.”

Linda began working in the kitchen at Holy Cross Hospital in Merrill and made a friend in Diane Schmidt. Diane invited Linda to a hayride where she introduced her to her brother, Earl. Just eight months later, on April 20, 1968, Earl and Linda were married. Linda went from a big city girl to a farmer’s wife, just like that. Early in their marriage they milked cows and farmed. Within the next four years they welcomed two children, Pamela and Amy. Linda always wanted a big family, but wasn’t sure she was going to get it as several years went by without another child. Eventually the floodgates opened and four more children were born: Andy, Stacy, Monica, and Mary.

As time went on, Earl became an over the road truck driver which left Linda to raise the kids and work on the farm. By 1982 the family was ready to try something different and bought the business that would become Schmidt’s Septic Service. Earl and Linda built and ran the business together for 40 years and it is now owned and operated by their son, Andy.

Linda was a hard worker and a strong woman. She led both Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops when her children were young. She sewed countless formal dresses for her five daughters, dolls and doll clothing, jeans for her long-legged children, and outfits for herself and her kids when they couldn’t afford to buy anything new. She was known for saying “The Lord will provide,” especially in tough times. Her very strong faith led her to becoming a Deacon in the Episcopal church. She was ordained in 2003 and served the Episcopal churches in Tomahawk, Antigo and Merrill, with Ascension Episcopal church in Merrill being her home church. Early in her ministry she started the Neighbor to Neighbor program in Merrill. She was also very passionate about youth ministry at the church and had a positive impact on many kids throughout the years. She was awarded the Bishop’s Cross in recognition of her work at the church.

Family was extremely important to Linda and she enjoyed spending time with her sisters and sisters-in-law, usually with many children around. She loved being a mother, even when it meant driving ten miles into town several times a day to get the kids where they needed to go. She was the mom who would keep the slider door on the van open to cool us off in the summer, and was always willing to give friends rides home.

In her later years, Linda battled dementia. This terrible and unforgiving disease stripped her of herself in many ways, but in some ways she still managed to shine through. She was quick to laugh, loved to do silly dances, was always looking for anything chocolate, and would never turn down ice cream. Her greatest passion had always been to be a mother (and later a grandmother and great-grandmother), and even into her last days she was focused on any little ones in the room. She is so loved and will be terribly missed by so many.

Linda is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Earl; her children Pamela (Bill) Pettijohn of Pueblo, CO, Amy (Eric) Heimerl of Merrill, WI, Andy Schmidt of Merrill,WI, Stacy (Kurt) Chapman of West Salem, WI, Monica Schmidt (Kelly Swiger) of West Des Moines, IA, Mary (Greg) Rajek of Rogersville, MO; her sisters Nancy Schulz of Tampa, FL, Kathleen (Mike) Slavin of Merrill, WI, and Joy Anderson of Rothschild, WI; her grandchildren McKenzie Heimerl, William Schmidt (Allison Chapman), Madeline (Nick) Bowe, Elijah (Nyomie) Heimerl, Wade (Jill Wright) Pettijohn, Clay Pettijohn, Owen Schmidt, Isaac Schmidt, Max Rajek, and Clara Rajek; her great-grandchildren Liam, Vingette, Bowde, Creed, and Ellyse; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Eleanor; her sisters-in-law Diane Pichelman and Elvera Neumann; her brothers-in-law John Anderson, Rod Picheman, and William (Peanuts) Neumann; her nephews John Stevenson, Brad Anderson, and Darren Neumann; and niece Heidi Marie Corroo.

A funeral service will be held at Ascension Episcopal Church in Merrill on Saturday, May 9th at 1:00 pm, The Reverend Mother Meredyth Albright presiding. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Cemetery directly following. There will be a visitation from 5:00-8:00 pm on Friday, May 8th at Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral & Cremation – 301 Eagle Dr., Merrill and from 11:00-1:00 before the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ascension Episcopal Church, Saint Vincent DePaul, or a local charity of your choice. Special thanks to all the caregivers from the Interim Hospice team, Aspirus Merrill Hospital, and Bell Tower, especially Jake, Nou, Kelly, Hannah, Ari, Heather, and Cassie. Rob L. Hartwig

Robin (“Rob”) Lee Hartwig, 68, passed away on April 25, 2026, at his home in Merrill, with his wife and daughters by his side. He was born on January 13, 1958, in Merrill, to Larry and Sandra (King) Hartwig. His mother survives.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barb Hartwig; his children, Amanda Hartwig, Mollie Hartwig, Katie (Patrick) Garcia, and Cally (Kyle) Hahn; his grandchildren, Veronica, Elwood, Nora, Rae, Calla, and Max; his mother, Sandra Hartwig; his brothers, Chris (Debbie) Hartwig and John Hartwig; and his sister, Holly (Dennis). He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Hartwig, and his grandson, Jack Hahn.

A man who knew how to talk to people, Rob spent his life in sales. He worked at JW Perry for 20 years, Kocourek Chevrolet for another 20, and retired from Ace Hardware after six more years of greeting customers with a smile. Rob took pride in always providing for his family; he showed his daughters what it meant to work hard and take on difficult things with a positive attitude. He never complained or looked for credit. He was a grateful man and often spoke of the “beautiful life” he had.

That same stubborn positivity carried him through his illness. Even after ALS stole his voice, he found a way to communicate with his girls: “one day at a time.”

Rob loved being outside; walking for hours in the woods, sitting with a Bud Light at the end of the day, or “hunting” squirrels in his backyard to keep the birds safe. He was born to hunt and was known by his closest buddies by his CB nickname, “Hushpuppy.” Rob and his truck knew every line, lane, and lake in Lincoln County and never needed directions.

He always knew the way; he doesn’t need a map for his next stop either.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, N4887 Hwy 17 in Bloomville, on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Deacon Jim Arndt will officiate. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral Home, 301 Eagle Drive, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial will immediately take place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery after the liturgy on Friday. Luncheon will be at St. Francis Catholic Church following the burial. After lunch is served, Rob’s family warmly welcomes anyone willing to share a special story or memory of him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the ALS Association or St. Francis Church in Merrill. You may also honor Rob in your own way by taking a walk in the woods with him in your heart.

When his girls were young, Rob would pull into the driveway, throw the truck in park, and announce, “Home, James,” to the back seat. His daughters now have those words tattooed on their arms in his handwriting as a reminder of what he always said to them. And now, he is.

Douglas 'Doug' Baumann

Douglas “Doug” Baumann, 76, Town of Wausau, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at home surrounded by his family, just 37 days after being diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. He was under the care of his loving wife of 53 years, Sharon and Aspirus Hospice and Comfort Care. He was born May 14, 1949, in Wausau, the son of the late Eugene and Bernice (Kranz) Baumann. Doug attended Zion Lutheran school and graduated from Wausau High School in 1967. On June 10,1972 he married Sharon Lev at Zion Lutheran Church, Wausau. Doug and Sharon had dated for 5 years and even separated states for a short time before getting married, but it was true love and they were together though his last breath.

A millwright at the Weyerhaeuser Paper Mill in Rothschild for 34 years, Doug retired at the age of 55. After retirement he and Sharon spent many years camping “Up North” and traveling. They planned trips in their motor home alone and with family and visited many states spending extended time in places like North Carolina and Florida. They also went out west several times seeing our national parks and camping along the way. Doug also started raising beef to share with his children, becoming a farmer at the age of 60.

Doug loved to go fast! When his family was young, they spent many hours snowmobiling and four wheeling. He was an active member of the Nutterville Sno Doggers(Nuts) for many years helping them get their 1st new Tucker, and groomed countless miles of trails. His family would put on thousands of miles each winter always trying to hit that “1000 mile” mark during Christmas break alone each year. The family rarely stopped to go inside, instead they took breaks along the trail, dad ways had a Kit Kat or Hershey bar in his pocket as a treat to share and they would be off again for more adventures.

In 1989 at the age of 40, Doug took up motocross. This was a passion that carried on throughout the rest of his life. Starting with a father-son relay race on a borrowed bike at Hixton, WI. That race grew to be a lifestyle; the family spent most weekends at a racetrack somewhere in district 16 between April and October. He also practiced every day on his practice track in the back yard. Doug made many friends along the way and earned many trophies and jackets. He also broke many bones gaining the nick name “Gimpy” by his family, neighborhood kids, and race friends. He often bragged about his 17 surgeries and multiple pieces of hardware, rods, plates and screws used to put him back together. He passed his need for speed and love of motocross to his son, grandsons and even great-grandson.

Doug was a devoted father and grandfather. He attended every softball game, soccer game, swim meet, wrestling meet, ice skating competition, band concert, track meet, tractor pull or motocross event they competed in. Sometimes packing up the motor home and traveling great distances with Sharon, to just be there. He was very handy and built playground sets, bear cages, did home repairs and upgrades, fixed bikes, snowmobiles, go-carts and helped with maintenance of vehicles. He truly did anything for his children and grandchildren. He could often be found in his shop with his buddy Dewbus, his springer spaniel, working on a project. Doug planned every vacation with his family spending many hours camping, fishing, water skiing and tubing during the summer in the state forest campgrounds of northern Wisconsin. During the last several summers, after his first broken femur slowed his motocross activities a bit, he and Sharon found enjoyment riding UTVs. They spent many hours and miles exploring together in the UP and northern Wisconsin.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Baumann, Town of Wausau. His children; Bradley (Barb) Baumann, Wausau and Kristie (Chris) Winter, Merrill. His grandchildren; Tanner Steele, Cassie Krueger, Matthew Meverden, Wausau; Amber Winter (Ryder Depies), Emily Winter, Logan Meverden (Hatti Learned), Merrill. Great-grandchildren Arthur Hogan and Aspyn Steele, Wausau. Sister Roxane (Jim) Jensen, Longmont CO and brother Gary Baumann (Jodi Wescott), Kohler WI. He also leaves behind his best friend and companion, Dewbus. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Jim Jensen and William Lev.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Doug’s hospice nurse Kathy for her kindness and compassion during his final days. The family also wishes to thank Pastor Scott Gustafson with Trinity Lutheran Church in Merrill for his thoughtfulness.

Following Doug’s wishes the family will mourn privately and there will be no formal memorial services.

Daniel Edward Lau

DANIEL "DAN" EDWARD LAU, age 68 of the town of Schley, died on April 9, 2026 at Aspirus Wausau hospital with his loving wife and caregiver at his side.

Born in Wisconsin Rapids on November 20, 1957, Dan was the son of Richard L. and Shirley M. (Stensberg) Lau. He began his schooling at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Wisconsin Rapids from kindergarten thru grade 8, then transferred to Wisconsin Rapids public school for grades 9-12, graduating with the class of 1975. He joined the United States Navy Construction Battalion under the delayed enlistment program, first doing active duty then reserves for a number of years. Dan enjoyed carpentry and excelled at trim and finish carpentry. He later installed fiber optic lines for phone and internet service, delivered packages for FedEx and Waltco before his final employment of driving semi and hauling pulpwood for Jake Henrichs Trucking. The best perk of that job was getting to see his grandchildren every work day as he picked up and returned his truck to Jake and Ashley's home. He retired in 2019 due to declining health.

Dan married Joy Spaulding on July 14, 1984. That union produced 3 daughters and later ended in divorce on November 5, 1993.

Dan met the love of his life and soul mate, Ruth Nelson, in 1995 and they exchanged vows on July 26, 1996, a union that lasted almost 30 years. Dan joked that he married a nurse to take care of him. That turned out to be a wise decision on his part as the many health challenges that he faced in the last years of his life were easier to face with a nurse at his side to help navigate the health system.

Even though Dan grew up in the city, he had a dream of owning a wooded lot to build a house on. That dream was fulfilled in 2000 when he and Ruth built their home in the town of Schley and continued to live their until the time of Dan's death. Being a carpenter, he made sure to design it so that it accommodated a wheelchair and everything that he needed to access was on the main level. He was proud to have completed the trim work in the house with Ruth helping with the staining and varnishing.

Dan was happy when he could be out in the woods, planting seeds in the ground and spending time with the grandchildren. He especially enjoyed teaching them how to splash in puddles and other things that their mothers might not have been especially happy with. He also shared his love of reading with them and books were always part of birthday and Christmas gifts.

Dan is survived by his wife, Ruth Nelson-Lau of Merrill (town of Schley); daughters Jennifer Lau of Wausau, Ashley (Jake) Henrichs and their children Evan, Emma, Elizabeth, Eve Lynn, and Edward of Medford, and Krista (Jason) Johnson and their children Lilian, Nikolai and Silas of Brainerd, MN. Also brothers Richard D. Lau (Cindy) of Wisconsin Rapids and Todd Lau (Carrie) of Tomahawk and sister Sandra (Ron) Meyers of Wisconsin Rapids. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Emma and Edward Stensberg and Donald G. and Henrietta Lau, aunt Joyce Stensberg, aunts, uncles, cousins, a great niece and great nephew.

Dan faced his failing health with courage until his body couldn't fight any longer. He would encourage everyone to take care of your health and live every day to the fullest as you don't know how long you have on this earth. Special thanks to the staff at the Aspirus Kidney Care and Dialysis Clinic for the wonderful care they provided for the past 5 plus years. You were like family to us, you made this journey easier to navigate. Also to Dr. Sheehan and nurse Lee Ann for taking my calls and answering all of my questions about adrenal insufficiency. Your help was greatly appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Dan's memory or make a donation to your favorite charity.
