What is freezing of gait?

Freezing of gait is the temporary, involuntary inability to move. It is a common impairment seen in Parkinson’s disease.

During an episode of freezing, a person with Parkinson’s disease may feel like their feet are glued to the ground.

What can trigger a freezing episode?

Freezing episodes tend to happen more often when a person with Parkinson’s is in transition, such as:

⭐️ Moving from sit to stand

🔆 Walking through a doorway

🔅Stepping over a threshold or change in flooring

⚠️ Turning around

Freezing episodes can also occur during a stressful situation or when attempting to multitask.

LSVT BIG is an evidence based exercise treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease that can help reduce symptoms such as freezing.

⭐️What to Expect at Your First Physical or Occupational Therapy Appointment?

At your first therapy appointment, your therapist will conduct an initial evaluation. An important component of the initial evaluation is to gather information about your medical history, symptoms, and goals for therapy.
Based on the information collected, your therapist will perform an examination, such as:

🔴 range of motion

🟡 strength

🔵 balance

🟢 coordination

🟠 pain

⚫️ sensation

⚪️ functional mobility and/or ADL status

Based on the examination findings, your therapist will develop an individualized treatment plan.

We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and exposure of problem areas. Please bring any relevant medical information, such as a list of your current medications and information about past surgeries and medical conditions.

🔆 Your initial evaluation sets the foundation for your upcoming treatment, so open communication and a thorough examination is crucial for targeted and effective therapy.

Contact Right Step Therapy to schedule your initial evaluation today! Home and clinic appointments are available.

LSVT BIG is moderate to high intensity, one-on-one program designed to help individuals with Parkinson's disease improve function mobility. By increasing range of motion amplitude, with repetitive movements, people with Parkinson’s disease can relearn how to move their bodies in more normal patterns. Over time, LSVT BIG helps individuals recalibrate their perception of movement. LSVT BIG can also be used to improve movement with other neurologic conditions. The program can be modified to accommodate seated positions. Contact Right Step Therapy to schedule an appointment with a certified clinician today!
