Muscle moves bone. Your therapist should know when the same muscle on one side is weak and long while the same muscle on the opposite side can be overused, short, and tight. Same muscle, different story on each side.
You can see how giving the same amount of work on both sides evenly would not help, each side needs different amounts of work and needs different techniques in order to bring back balance and less pain.
We often favor one side of our body and use that muscle more often, creating weakness on the opposing side. Funny enough, the weak side can often be the painful side!
It's important to know why it's ppainful, maybe it hurts because it's too long and pulling from the stronger side.
Also, funny enough, trigger points in the weaker and longer muscle can also turn the weaker muscle "back on", re-reminding that muscle to engage and work better. So massage can make a muscle stronger! It's just science!
These are the muscles I work with to help people feel better in their back, hips, shoulders, and neck. Naturally muscle moves bone and can see the difference between before and afters.
You can see his left neck was higher, right shoulder-blade was lower, right low back was higher, right front of hip was more anteriorly rotated, and top right shoulder was higher.
It is important to know which exact muscles causes this.
