Have pain that starts in your low back or butt and shoots down the leg? Maybe it ends at the glute and doesn't shoot down any further. Maybe it goes all the way to your toes on one leg, usually the same side.
"Sciatica" can have many different pathways, showing up differently for different people, and that is because there are many things that can mimic "Sciatica".
Did you know a ligament can mimic Sciatica, and this is actually not taught in all massage schools?
I loved my massage school, however, it is up to the therapist if they really want to dig deep and learn the different pathways of "Sciatica" with advanced medical massage classes after graduation. So sadly, these ligaments that could be causing your pain often get missed during session.
I also put "Sciatica" in parentheses because true Sciatica is an injury in the lower back like a slipped disc pressing on the nerve. This is rarely the case and can be caused by something else or mimicked by a muscle or ligament. It is important to see your doctor and be cleared of such low back injuries.
My name is Tara, licensed massage therapist, and I specialize in the relief of back and hip pain in Mesa, Arizona.
