One of my favorite reminders. Taking a step back and appreciating exactly where we are at is a simple mindfulness skill that we can practice. We often get caught up in where we “should” be at rather than accepting our current present state.
A couple of weeks ago I had an accident where I dislocated my kneecap and fell onto my kitchen tile, causing me to also break my forearm. Being in a knee immobilizer and an arm splint, I initially asked myself “Why me?” And “Why now?”. No one asks for injuries, and no one wants to go through the long process of healing from them. We just want an instant switch in feeling better, which isn’t possible.
However, in situations like these, we do have a choice. We can look at the situation as, “Why me?” or, we can look at the situation as “What is the universe trying to teach me?”. Sometimes things happen to us to show us a message. We have the power to look at a negative situation through an alternative lens if we choose to.
The human body is truly amazing, especially our bodies healing process (physically or mentally). Sometimes we need a reminder to be gentle with ourselves. Sometimes we need to take that step back, appreciate where we are at, and also accept where we are at (the good and the bad).
