Self-care isn’t always spa-days, bubble baths, or indulgence. It can be putting in the work to encourage your self-growth. It can be self-discipline.

It can be an opportunity to learn about yourself- Exploring what your individual needs are and how to take care of them.

How often are you implementing self-care? What does self-care mean to you?

One of my favorite reminders. Taking a step back and appreciating exactly where we are at is a simple mindfulness skill that we can practice. We often get caught up in where we “should” be at rather than accepting our current present state.

A couple of weeks ago I had an accident where I dislocated my kneecap and fell onto my kitchen tile, causing me to also break my forearm. Being in a knee immobilizer and an arm splint, I initially asked myself “Why me?” And “Why now?”. No one asks for injuries, and no one wants to go through the long process of healing from them. We just want an instant switch in feeling better, which isn’t possible.

However, in situations like these, we do have a choice. We can look at the situation as, “Why me?” or, we can look at the situation as “What is the universe trying to teach me?”. Sometimes things happen to us to show us a message. We have the power to look at a negative situation through an alternative lens if we choose to.

The human body is truly amazing, especially our bodies healing process (physically or mentally). Sometimes we need a reminder to be gentle with ourselves. Sometimes we need to take that step back, appreciate where we are at, and also accept where we are at (the good and the bad).

Who else feels so good after getting their greens? 🥬

Proper nutrition not only makes us feel good physically, but can also make us feel better mentally. Food is fuel for our brains to function properly and is shown to improve our emotional well-being. Therapy can help us understand the dynamics as to why we are craving unhealthy foods, as well as help us establish a better relationship with food so that we can make the right lifestyle adjustments for our own individual needs.

Notice how you respond vs. react to people today.

Responding: Notice what physical sensations you feel in the moment they are speaking to you. Are you actually listening to what they are saying? Are you allowing yourself to be present in the moment? Are you allowing yourself to pause before speaking back to them?

Reacting: Notice how the physical sensations in your body change when something they say triggers you. Practice allowing yourself to sit with this feeling, even if it is uncomfortable. Identify what emotions are being felt, and ask yourself, what is this trigger and what does it mean to me?

If someone asked you this today, would you know what your answer would be?

This is one of my favorite questions to ask and even though it is simple, it is often one of the hardest to answer.

What are you proud of? What traits do you love the most about yourself? What has been your most challenging obstacle? How do your interests bring you joy?

Life can feel blurry when we do not have a clear sense of who we are as a person. When we learn to define and accept what our unique characteristics are, we are able to gain confidence within ourselves. Once we have this clarity, we can fully embrace how we want to live our lives- not to impress other people, but to impress ourselves.
