As some of you know, Makena has struggled with her health since she was 16. She has been diagnosed with many rare and challenging neurological and pain conditions, including AMPS, hEDS, MCAS, POTS, and Periodic Paralysis. Makena has been accepted into a specialized treatment program at Re+Active, in Los Angeles. This program specializes in neurological and chronic pain conditions. The out of pocket cost is over $15,000.

In an effort to help raise money for Makena, Lauren and I have made a special piece of art. We call it “One in a Million”. This piece was inspired by Makena’s t-shirt design of a zebra butterfly. The zebra is the symbol of EDS and other rare diseases. In medical school, doctors are taught to look for horses, not zebras. This makes things very challenging for those who truly are zebras, living with rare conditions. Frequently the zebras are misdiagnosed, or told the pain and symptoms are in their head. Awareness is slowly growing, but treatment and acceptance in the medical community is still light years behind. Makena has always had an ability to make the most of her situation. She is a zebra among zebras, with a positive attitude and determination to not only persevere, but also to grow, improve, and to help others along the way. Much of Makena’s art is inspired by her painful and difficult journey through life. Our piece “One in a Million” reminds that beauty can be found in all things if we take the time to look.

"Things Aren't Going As Planned" - Okay, picture this: You wake up, ready to tackle the day, but your body's like, 'Hold up, we've got other plans.' Living with a chronic illness is like being on a rollercoaster you didn't sign up for. But I'm learning how to roll with the punches and embrace the chaos. I knew I would need something to wear during treatment that would remind me that not everything is going to go my way, but I can always adapt and overcome.

"Yay! I'm A Llama Again" - You know the scene in 'Emperor's New Groove' where Kuzco, the emperors turned llama, is desperately trying to turn back into a human? (If you've never watch that movie, you have been severely deprived.) He goes through this hilarious journey, drinking all sorts of potions, turning into different animals, but ends up celebrating when he turns back into a llama. Even though the plan was to try and turn him back into a human. Well, my dad and I used to joke about that scene, comparing it to my own battle with chronic illness. When my symptoms were at a manageable baseline (although not 'normal human functioning'), with a twinkle in his eye, he'd poke me in the side and say, "Yay! I'm a llama again!".

"One In A Million" - Imagine being a zebra in a room full of horses. Doctors are always on the lookout for the usual suspects -like horses- but they kind of forget about us rare gems, the zebras. Sometimes it’s annoying when you know more about your illness than most professionals out there, but such is the life of a medical anomaly.

These shirts are made to order. We will submit an order for them on June 2 and they usually take 2-3 weeks to arrive.
