Homemade formula for the win!!!!
For those of you who have been following along with Gabriel’s journey, I thought you might find this interesting.
When all of this started back in July, one of the thoughts that kept circulating in my mind was what did I do wrong? I think that’s a normal reaction for parents when their children are struggling with health conditions.
When I was pregnant with Gabe, I knew that there was a high likelihood that I wouldn’t produce breastmilk again. He was a third child I couldn’t breast-feed. I had started looking into homemade formulas as well as other options.

The first thing I thought was that maybe the homemade formula I made didn’t have enough good bacteria for him. We used donated breastmilk for my second child and he didn’t have any health issues and since I had Gabe after Covid, I decided not to go with donated breastmilk for him. I’ve never been able to make milk on my own, so I always had to get creative.
My worry was that he didn’t have enough good bacteria, which is why he couldn’t fight off the bad bacteria like strep, which is one of the underlying causes of pans and pandas.
I recently did a stool test to check for infections and to see how high they were, but also to see if his levels of good bacteria was sufficient. Honestly, I was expecting them to be low.
I did a lot of research when it came to the homemade formula and I started giving it to him at three weeks old. He was on it until he was a year. It was expensive, it was tough to make and be consistent with, but we did it.
Long story short, we got his stool test back and his good bacteria was not only sufficient, but it was actually on the higher side.
I know I don’t need to beat myself up over the decisions that I’ve made, we all do the best we can with the information that we have, but this set my mind at ease.
Now we know exactly what we’re working with in the Gut and it seems like we just need to continue to work the path we’ve been on for the last three months .
We also did a hair tissue mineral analysis that showed high aluminum. I’ll do another post about that.
If you have been considering diving deeper into your Gut Health, I always recommend starting with the hair scan, but if there’s enough of a problem and you’re not getting answers, I definitely recommend a stool test.
