Good morning! I know I haven't posted in a long time, but I'm still practicing, just not in our building any more. Last year our son was in the hospital because of his rare autoimmune brain disease called Rasmussen's encephalitis. He can go through periods of intractable seizures which do not respond to seizure meds. Last year he went in for another bad episode of seizures. They put him in a coma and did not listen to us, did not believe us, and added seizure drugs which actually made him come out of the coma in seizures so they had to put him under again. He ended up being on a ventilator in induced comas for about 6-8 weeks total, with resultant pneumonia 3x and UTI's, both d/t the hospital treatments. He was in hospital ICU then in step down rehab for total of 5 1/2 months. He lost about 40 lbs. So I'd cut back on my practice, lost our building, and started working part time for another clinic where some of my patients went with me. Our son is home and doing much better, off the drugs, but still can't walk d/t atrophy from his long hospital stay.
Our medicine is often integrative, combined with modern medicine when needed. Is anything 100%? No. We understand this but still adjust and apply when able. Some cases are tough to deal with, as in our son's case. Ideally, I would take him to some of our functional neurologists who might be able to help. However, we do not have the funds to pay for it. It's sad that the insurance companies will pay for his million dollar stay in neuro ICU and the rehab hospital, but not a cent toward naturopathic/functional medicine. I'm all for doctors getting paid for true health care, and lifesaving measures, but when people can't afford REAL health treatments that could actually help them avoid these long hospital stays, insurance won't even consider it. Also sad that doctors in the hospital are so arrogant that they refuse to listen to the families who know the patient better than the doctors. Especially with rare conditions, about which they admitted to knowing nothing. When they finally do what we ask them, it works and seizures stop. Sometimes the drugs they think should work can actually cause the problem which they are designed to stop. It's even in the possible "side" effects. Yet they continue to refuse to acknowledge that fact. I admit, the best thing we've found to help our son is diet. But isn't 100% and he can start into these episodes without any known trigger. He is one who must be kept ketogenic or the seizures can start. Not everyone is the same, and most people should not be on keto all the time, but a few weeks or even a month of it can be very helpful. Then diet variation with HEALTHY foods is important - vegetarian for a few weeks, maybe even carnivore for a few weeks (though not everyone can do that long), paleo for a few months, then even vegan for a while, yet some cannot do vegan or vegetarian very long. We are all made individually and, d/t our highly toxic environment and lifestyles, cannot all eat the same. Foods that should be healthy can cause an inflammatory response in some people. This makes diet recommendations sometimes complicated. We always listen to the patient and find out when they feel the best and strongest. However, no one needs refined sugar or flour. Gluten sensitivities are way more prevalent than people realize. They can trigger inflammation in any organ in the body - heart, stomach, joints, lungs, etc. Sugar and cow's milk can do the same thing. They are often delayed reactions up to 48 hours later. That makes it hard to pin down the trigger foods but we can find a pattern when we do a food diary along with symptoms. People can also have bad reactions to healthy foods like some vegetables and meats, and even fish.
I know this is a long post, but I hope it brings some help to some.
Please message me if you have questions. I do phone consults and zoom as well. Outside of Arizona, I must limit medical advice to basic info and can't diagnose or medically treat people in another state, UNLESS they have been here in Arizona and are a patient I've seen here.
Again, sorry I haven't posted in a while but will try and do better with shorter posts. Take care and have a healthy day!
