COLON CANCER RATES INCREASING IN YOUNGER ADULTS:
The recent passing of Chadwick Boseman at the age of 43 is a reminder of how cancer can attack regardless of age. The American Cancer Society (ACS) is reporting that since 1994 there has been a 51% increase in colon cancer among those under the age of 51. In the U.S., about 50,000 deaths per year are attributed to colon cancer.
In 2018, the ACS updated its screening guidelines to recommend most individuals should begin screening for colon cancer at the age of 45; especially African-Americans because they have higher odds of getting colon cancer when compared to Anglo-Americans. Also, if you have had a relative get colon cancer before the age of 40 you should start screening at the age of 45.
A colonoscopy is considered the preferred method for detection, as well as, the treatment for colon cancer; however, the National Institute of Health reports about a 40% compliance verse mammograms at 75% compliance. The American Journal of Managed Care identified the following reasons for deterring this procedure:
1) The prep
2) Time of procedure
3) Needing transportation
4) Receiving anesthesia
5) Risks of bleeding and intestinal perforation
Another factor that might keep you from getting a colonoscopy is the cost. Without insurance, www.mdsave.com has estimated the cost to range from $1263 to $3095.
For under $25, there is a screening that can be done on a yearly basis. It is called the F***l Immunochemical Test (FIT). It is fast, accurate, and easy to use in the privacy of your own home. A positive test indicates abnormal bleeding in the lower digestive tract (colon) that could be a result of colon cancer, diverticulitis, colitis, or hemorrhoids. If you do have a positive test, it is recommended that you see a GI-specialist within 6 months.
The CDC estimates that more than 20 million adults in the U.S. haven't had any screening for colon cancer. This FIT test is now available to purchase directly through Pinnacle Bio Labs (www.pblabs.com).
If you are over the age of 45, now is the time to be proactive and start screening on a yearly basis.
